The Juggler from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

The Juggler is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. The Juggler, would normally form the first movement of the concerto, but it stands alone very well as an individual work for euphonium and band. The music is episodic beginning with with a minimalist texture over which the euphonium "tweets" three short calls before riffing around. It is broken up by a 'circus waltz' exploiting the agility and vituosity of the euphonium in a fun context. On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."The Juggler for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. Orchestral and wind band versions are available from Boosey and Hawkes.

It Takes Two from Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

It Takes Two is taken from Karl Jenkins' Euphonium Concerto, an extended work given its world premiere by euphonium soloist David Childs and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes in St. David's Hall, Cardiff during the last night of the 2009 Welsh Proms. It Takes Two, which would normally form the third movement of the concerto, is an improvisatory style for the soloist. The music is in the form of a habanera style tango with the euphonium 'partnering' a number of instruments in the ensemble while 'breaking away' from time to time in rolling roulades. A judicious use of multi-phonics rounds off the coda.On his eagerness to compose the work for David, Karl Jenkins stated, "It's been a privilege to write for such a virtuoso performer. We had been talking about it for some time and happily it all came together in 2009. David is a wonderful musician of the highest quality and it was a joy and, indeed, a challenge, to write a work for both him and an instrument of such beauty and agility."It Takes Two for euphonium and brass band recieved its premiere on November 29th 2009 in Swansea's Brangwyn Hall performed by David Childs and the Cory Band conducted by Dr. Robert Childs, and can be heard on Doyen CD262 Moto Perpetuo.Other individual movements and the complete Concerto for Euphonium with brass band accompniament are available from Prima Vista Musikk. Stratos - Concerto for Euphonium - Jonathan Bates

Stratos (Concerto for Euphonium) was composed for the euphonium virtuoso David Childs, and is featured on the Flowers Brass Band CD Stratos, featuring all new works by Jonathan Bates.I - Charge of the Intergalactic RocksUnpredictable in nature, this opening movement fizzes along through varying keys, styles, time signatures and many sudden changes of both volume and timbre. A large senza misura cadenza for the euphonium, accompanied by snare drum playing in time, forms the central focal point of the movement, where many of the motifs used throughout the movement are introduced primarily, or revisited in a new guise. This movement relies mostly on rhythmic and textural variety, rather than the melodic and harmonic nature of the latter movements.II - Sleeping Earth (from Outer Space)A calm and desolate setting forms the core of the second movement. The music aims to capture the view over the Earth from outer space, the silent beauty of the curvature of the planet and the sun beaming from behind.III - Dance of the Spiral GalaxiesThe rip-roaring finale showcases the soloist's flair and rhythm with a driving pulse from the first note to the last, climaxing in a grand reprise of the first movement. An opening theme played in the solo line, which is then repeated through several instruments, forms the backbone of the movement as it is developed and changed from new ideas and textures.

Fantasie Originale (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Mantia & Picchi - Wilkinson, Keith M.

Simone Mantia (1873 - 1951) was born in Italy and moved with his family to USA in 1881. He developed an early interest in playing the euphonium and from 1898 to 1904 was the euphonium soloist of the Sousa Band. This solo was written by him to demonstrate both the operatic qualities of his instrument as well as its outstanding technical possibilities. The solo is based on themes by the Italian composer Ermano Picchi (1811 - 1856), Mantia weaving his virtuosic variations around the thematic material provided by Picchi. This arrangement was prepared at the request of Aaron VanderWeele, euphonium soloist of the New York Staff Band, for his UK tour in 2008.
