    Requiem Paraphrases - Peter Meechan

Written as part of the 250 year celebrations of Mozart's birth (1756), this is a solo guaranteed to please an audience, and be an enjoyable challenge to perform. Originally commissioned by and dedicated to Steven Mead, he described the work as "...Requiem Paraphrases will probably turn out to be regarded as perhaps the most important work for euph and brass ensemble ever composed...simply magnificent and if Mozart were alive today he would have enjoyed the funky middle section, I'm sure."

The Haunted Halls - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This work was commissioned by Philip Biggs and Dr. Nicholas Childs for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain summer course 2006.The idea behind the piece lies with the magnificent surroundings in which the annual National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain course is held, The Bromsgrove School. The course is held over a week long period at the school. Both staff and students stay on the premises for the duration, making use of the schools boarding facilities. The school itself is huge with various buildings on site and steeped in history. On entering the premises you are immediately engulfed in the school's splendid grandeur and tradition as its unique appearance grabs you and whisks you off to a world of old fashioned headmasters, public schoolboys and boarding school antics. As the evening draws to a close there is a dark and eerie side to the building that sends a tingle up your spine. The piece originated from a story I imagined where at night ghouls, ghosts and spirits emerge from inside the building's walls, paintings and surroundings to cause havoc in their desperate attempt to free themselves from the purgatory that is the spirit world by haunting the living. A group of pupils wake, hearing the commotion and startle the spirits who see this as an opportunity to possess the beings in order to free them from their turmoil. A great chase ensues with the pupils using any means possible to escape from their pursuing spirits. The only weapon against the spirits is the dawning sunshine and so the adventure begins with the pupils having to escape from the chasing spirits and hope that dawn breaks and the sunshine engulfs the supernatural, imploding them back to their world. The Smoke That Thunders - Andrew Wainwright

David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary and explorer. From 1841 until his death in 1873, Livingstone explored the interior of central and southern Africa. His initial aim was to spread Christianity and bring commerce and ‘civilisation' to these regions, but his later missions were more concerned with exploration. This piece of music tells the story of the part of his journey that led to him discovering Victoria Falls. The work starts out in optimistic fashion, with the Scottish folk-song A Man's a Man for a', by Robert Burns, which Livingstone reportedly used to hum on his travels. The troubles and difficulties of his journey were great and the next section describes his battles with the local African tribes, who were suspicious of his motives. After surviving these assaults, numerous bouts of African fever and several skirmishes with wild animals, a more reflective section ensues, which describes the doubts Livingstone had about continuing his mission. This is epitomised by the hymn Lord, Send Me Anywhere, which Livingstone himself wrote. After much deliberation and prayer, Livingstone decided to carry on and the final section describes his journey along the Zambezi River, the triumphant sounds eliciting his elation at discovering the magnificent Victoria Falls, or as it is known by the locals, "Mosi-oa-Tunya", The Smoke That Thunders.

    Passacaglia in C Minor - Bach, J.S.

Johann Sebastian Bach - for me, the supreme musician - left no markings or directions of any kind on this magnificent work for organ, as was normal for those times. Cconstantly full of interest for the player and the listener, I have 'organised' the music with dynamics, phrasings and tempi according to my own judgement in order to facilitate an ensemble performance - the same process naturally used by all performers, from Bach to the present day. This version offers satisfying challenges for all parts of the Band.

    Sparkling Overture - Marc Jeanbourquin

Sparkling Overture was written to celebrate the centenary of the Swiss brass band La Musique Militaire de Rougemont. This energetic and dynamic piece opens with a festive and resolutely positive fanfare. The much more tranquil and lilting second theme is a magnificent chorale which is then followed by a brilliant return of the first motif. Used as a theme tune, this piece will be ideal as a contrasting, joyful and sparkling concert opening.
