The Legend of King Arthur - Peter Meechan

King Arthur is the subject of many tales, stories, myths and legends - from his ascension to the throne by pulling the sword from the stone, his courageous battles with his fellow Knights of the Round Table, to his ultimately tragic love for Guinevere. The Legend of King Arthur is a musical portrayal of some of the most important moments in the legend. The opening of the work - a rock inspired overture - is a reference to Arthura??s final resting place (at least, so some legends have it!), the modern day Glastonbury (Avalon in the legend), and it is in this opening that we hear for Arthura??s theme. This high octane opening gives way to a mysterious section - as Merlin (the mystical wizard) places in a stone a sword, upon which was inscribed a??Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all Englanda?. The music describes the mystical surroundings as each of the contenders for the throne take their turn - to no avail - and with a return to the original theme, we hear Arthur pull the sword from the stone, to become King of England.Next we hear a depiction of Arthura??s greatest victory in battle ??" The Battle of Mount Badon. He finally defeated the Saxon invaders of Britain - over 900 Saxons perished - and the victory brought about an extended period of peace. Arthur is portrayed as brave, bold and confident as he and his Knights end years of invasion. The penultimate section of the work tells the tale of Arthura??s tragic love for Guinevere - his traitorous wife, who through her infidelity with Sir Lancelot (Arthura??s most trusted Knight), ultimately leads Arthur in to his final battle with his nephew, Mordred. We hear the final bitter battle, which eventually ends with only Arthur and Mordred fighting. Arthur is wounded, fatally, by his nephew -at which point we hear with a sudden and dramatic sounding of Arthura??s theme - and is taken to Avalon to die.The Legend of King Arthur is dedicated to Michael Bach and Brass Band BA?Argermusik Luzern, who commissioned the work.

Canticle: The Legend of Vale Royal

In 1270 Edward I survived a shipwreck and, to give thanks for his deliverance, ordered the building of a great abbey of dimensions to rival any in the land and bequeathed funds to the Order of Cistercian monks to build and run the abbey. The location chosen was on the banks of the river Weaver close to the hometown of the?composer's mother in Cheshire. Huge funds were put in to the project over many decades and although the foundations were laid for the great pillars to support the building (still visible to this day), the abbey was built only to a fraction of its original design. Instead the funds were pilfered and misappropriated to fund the opulent lifestyle of the profligate monks who were roundly despised and reviled in the county (merry gentlemen indeed!). In 1543, Henry VIII set about the dissolution of the abbey and the destruction of its building to wide acclaim and much rejoicing in the county. This piece tells that story. Lady of the Lake

A remote Carmarthenshire lake shrouded in Welsh legend has been named as one of the 1,000 must-see sights across the globe by an influential travel bible. Llyn y Fan Fach, 12km southeast of Llandovery in the Brecon Beacons, is the only spot in Wales to make the list, which was put together by Lonely Planet. "This isolated drop of blue, beneath a cirque of raw Welsh hills, is enchanting - and enchanted," Lonely Planet's 1,000 Ultimate Sights tells readers. The st?ory goes that in the 13th Century, a farmer grazing cattle on the nearby slopes spotted the most beautiful woman he'd ever seen. She was a fairy maiden, who agreed to marry him on one proviso - he must not hit her more than twice. In time, the inevitable happened - three strikes, and the otherworldly wife disappeared back into the lake, taking her magic cows with her. This work, for flugel horn and brass band, is reflective in nature, portraying the dismay of the man in losing his wife for his own selfishness. The work was written for and premiered by Rob Nesbitt & City of Cardiff (Melingriffith) Band, at the 2019 Welsh Open Entertainment Contest in Porthcawl, Wales.

Entry of the Gods into Valhalla - Wagner, R.

The Valkyrie, the second opera of Wagner's Ring cycle, ends with the Gods crossing the rainbow bridge and entering into Valhalla, another name for Odin's Hall, the home for the slain in battle. Wagner's mish-mash of ancient Norse and Germanic legend need not worry the listener too much unless he or she wants to take in the whole Wagner experience. Needless to say, in this excerpt there is more than enough to enjoy of the majesty and variety of Wagner's music.
