Unfortunately this title is now only available as a digital downloadDaedalus (pronounced day-da-luss) is a prominent figure in Greek mythology, renowned for his exceptional skills as an inventor, craftsman, and architect. The story of Daedalus symbolises human ingenuity, and epitomises the complex relationship between human creativity and its consequences. His myths explore themes of innovation, pride, and the perilous balance between human ambition and natural limits. After designing the labyrinth for King Minos, Daedalus and his son, Icarus, were imprisoned in a tower in Crete. Daedalus fashioned wings from feathers and wax, and father and son set out on their ill-fated escape. This simple little romance was written in the style of a Catalan folk song. It is entirely original and undoubtedly influenced by the arrangements of Catalan folk songs for guitar by Miguel Llobet (1878-1938). Typical of the style, the tune is in 6/8 with a gentle lilt and has just one rather refined outburst of passion before retreating back into its shell. The lyrical nature of the music is particularly suited to the brass band.Duration: 3.30

Principio is a vivacious concert opener. The word Principio means start or beginning in both Spanish and Italian and this piece sets out to be just that - an energetic concert opener. Most of the melodic material is derived from the main theme which starts and ends the piece with its slightly lopsided rhythm. This is a song-setting giving an opportunity for some lyrical expression. It started life as a song on the subject of gold but ended up by standing alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the 5/4 melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little white-note dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language.Duration: 3.45

La fe es la victoria was written for the USA Southern Staff Band and premiered on its tour of the UK in 2018. It is based on the well-known gospel song Faith is the victory (S.A.S.B. 919) and this salsa-style arrangement is meant to express the believer's joy in knowing that faith in Jesus is the 'glorious victory that overcomes the world'.
