Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished. After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica's main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their ownmusical style called Reggae. Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats.

£59.99David of the White Rock - Philip Sparke
This is an ancient Welsh air that was first published in Relics of the Welsh Bards in 1794. Dafydd (David) Owain was a famous Welsh bard who lived on a farm called Gareg Wen (The White Rock) in Eifionydd, Carnarnvonshire, North Wales. Tradition has it that on his deathbed he called for his harp and composed this lovely melody, requesting that it be played at his funeral. Accordingly, it was later played at the parish church of Ynys-Cynhaiarn. Lyrics were later added by Ceiriog Hughes, which describe the melody's inspiration. This version for brass band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

This enduringly popular seasonal song has long been a Christmas favourite, even though the lyrics don't mention 'Christmas' at all. The words were by Dick Smith (1901-1935) and the music by Felix Bernard (1897-1944). The inspiration was reportedly a visit by Smith to Honesdale's (his hometown) Central Park when it was covered in snow.The first recording was made by Richard Himber's Ritz-Carlton Orchestra in 1934. The same year Guy Lombardo and his band, The Royal Canadians, took the song to number 2 in the US Billboard Chart, where it stayed for 9 weeks. It has since been recorded by over 150 artists, the most successful versionsbeing by Perry Como and the Andrews Sisters, both released in 1946.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina is the best-known song from the 1976 musical Evita. It was sung by Eva Peron when she was addressing the crowds amassed in the square below her balcony. More recently it was a hit for Madonna, who sang it in the 1996 film version of Evita. This arrangement for Brass Band retains the broad emotive melody of the original together with its intense emotion.

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth BrassBand using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penleehas been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame, but it was also thehighest new entry. The work has subsequently been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, on the CD entitled Penlee.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 13 minutes

La muerte del angel was composed by Astor Piazzolla as incidental music for the 1962 play Tango del angel by Alberto Rodriguez Munoz.In the play an angel heals the spirits of the residents of a shabby Buenos Aires neighborhood, but is ultimately killed in a knife fight.This is one of the distinctive pieces with which Piazzolla shook the conservative world of tango. With it's harsh dissonances, mood swings and high energy level, it was in sharp contrast to the traditional tangoes.La muerte del angel was frequently played by Piazzolla in concerts, and he recorded it on at least fourteen different occasions.This arrangement was written to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag for their performance at Siddis Brass 2007.-Svein H. When the publisher asked me to make an arrangement of an ABBA tune, S.O.S. was the first song I thought of. Its introduction and melody are well suited to play for Wind Band. Admittedly, the key had to be shifted to make it sound good for this instrumentation. To me, this is nostalgia, while for others, the Mamma Mia movie/show will be what they associate with this wonderful song. Apart from a few medleys, few of ABBA's songs are available to Wind Band. So, it was very fun to work on this classic.The arrangement is made quite simply to fit many sizes of Bands. Technically, it is also relatively simple both in range and rhythm. As you can see, there are many ways to adjust this arrangement to your own ensemble. Bring out melody lines and the bassline, and a lot is done. If needed, simplify to make it sound nice.Bjorn Morten Kjaernes

The "Rakoczi March" (Hungarian March) was the unofficial state anthem of Hungary before Ferenc Kolcsey wrote the Himnusz which is today the official national anthem of Hungary. The first version of this march-song was probably created around 1730 by one or more anonymous composers, although tradition says that it was the favorite march of Francis Rakoczi II. That early version called back Francis Rakoczi II to save his people. It was very popular in the 18th century but in the 19th century the more refined Rakoczi March became prevalent. Hector Berlioz included the music in his composition "La Damnation de Faust" in 1846, and Franz Liszt wrote a number of arrangements, includinghis Hungarian Rhapsody No. 15, based on the theme. The march gave its name to a 1933 Austrian-Hungarian feature film - Rakoczy-Marsch This arrangement is based on Berlioz instrumentation and phrasing from his Hungarian March, but in the form of the 19th century Rakoczi March

The most beautiful thing is one of Jahn Teigens most popular pop ballads. It was written in 1988 together with Rolf Lovland and Ove Borochstein and went straight to the top of the Norwegian hitlists. Even 20 years after its release, in 2008, it reached the hitlists after Teigen performed it during the Eurovision Song Contest. The song is often played on Norwegian radio and was the 70th most played in the period 1993-2013 on the radio channel P4. Now it's finally arranged for band in the popular Young Band series with adaptation of key that fit young musicians. It will definitely be a popular number in your next concert.
