GREAT SALVATION WAR, The (Brass Band Set) - James Curnow
James Curnow was inspired to compose this work after reading 'Marching to Glory', a history of The Salvation Army in the USA. The writer of the book, Dr. Edward H. McKinley, was a colleague of Curnow on the faculty of Asbury College and a member of The Salvation Army Student Fellowship Band. The work was written for this band and premiered by them at the Centennial National Congress in 1980 which was held at Asbury College. Curnow has endeavoured to capture the spirit of early day Salvationists as they gave themselves completely to the great salvation war. Three songs support the three-part structure; 1) Stand like the brave 2) In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust 3) Rescue the perishing.

TRANSFORMATION (Brass Band Set) - Kenneth Downie
I believe in transformation, God can change the hearts of men, And refine the evil nature, till it glows with grace again'. So wrote John Gowans in the second verse of his great hymn, 'I believe that God the Father, can be seen in God the Son', written specifically to affirm Salvationists' beliefs. It is sung to the tune Bethany and in seeking to explore this great subject at the heart of the Christian gospel in musical terms, the composer has used this fine tune as the basis. Although it never appears in its entirety, it is seldom out of the picture and much of the work is derived from it. The other main source of material is the lovely, simple chorus, 'Some day I shall be like him, changed to heavenly beauty, when his face I see'. This chorus is especially prominent in the middle section but there are important references to it throughout. There are also brief references to Charles Wesley's hymn, 'Love Divine' and, in particular, the telling lines, 'Changed from glory into glory, till in Heaven we take our place'. The work suggests that, at times, the process of being transformed is a struggle, portrayed with many passages of fraught and demanding music. Considerable reserves of stamina and technique are required while, in contrast, the chorus, 'Some day I shall be like him' provides the warm, gentle centre of the work. The premiere of the work was given by The International Staff Band of The Salvation Army in Cadogan Hall on Friday 3rd June 2011, as part of the band's 120th anniversary celebrations.

FAITH IS THE VICTORY (Brass Band Set) - James Curnow
James Curnow wrote this march while completing his Masters degree at Michigan State University and unsurprisingly reflects the great tradition of American symphonic wind band marches. Curnow embraces the sound world of the great Mid-Western universities (Michigan, Illinois, Iowa and Ohio State) and the march styles of Eric Osterling and Clifton Williams. Several changes of tempo indicate that this is anything but an ordinary street march. The wonderful changes of key are also notable and propel the music towards an exciting finish.

The words and melody are so closely associated with its author, that the first lines are inscribed on Luther's monument at Wittenberg.No. 428 Song Arrangement - I'd rather have Jesus (Peter Kim)Bandmaster Peter Kim from the USA Central Territory presents an arrangement of the popular gospel song, 'I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold.' The lyrics were written by Rhea F. Miller in 1922 and have proved popular with many Christian denominations ever since.No. 429 Bound for Glory (Ian Feltwell)The song 'I'm a soldier bound for glory' was first published in 1922, is a great Salvation Army song of testimony and still remains a firm favourite today.

Handel in the Band - Kenneth Downie
Handel in the Band is a virtuoso set of symphonic variations on one of Handel's best known keyboard dances, the Sarabande from his Suite in D minor, HWV 437, based on the Spanish traditional dance La Folia. Kenneth Downie's work was commissioned by Brass Band Treize Etoiles, for performance at the 2013 Swiss National Brass Band Championships, where it was conducted by James Gourlay. The title is a reference to Percy Grainger's popular Handel in the Strand, and is indicative of the witty and theatrical nature of the music, which is more playful than conventional competition pieces and as such offers different challenges to brass bands as well as being thoroughly entertaining for audiences. Kenneth Downie is one of the most respected and experienced brass band composers. His music has been widely performed and published throughout the brass band world since the 1960s. Handel in the Band has been selected as the set work for the Championship Section final of this year's National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, which takes place at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 6th October 2018.

Fanfare Prelude on 'Richmond' was written for the inaugural Texas Brass Fest, held at Round Top Festival Institute on 27 May 2023, for the four premier brass bands in Texas - Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio Brass Bands. It is based on the much loved hymn of the church by Charles Wesley, which is also known as 'O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing', the first verse of which reads: O for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer's praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of his grace! For maximum effect it is suggested that cornets and trombones are staged stood around the band, although if this is not possible then traditional band formation will be acceptable. COMPOSER: Tamsin TateCOMPOSERS NOTE"All shall be well" was composed during the first lockdown of the Covid crisis, from May 2020.This was a worrying time for many and a time of great anxiety and sadness for some.I have always tried to be practically optimistic in trying times, but still I needed hope.I am lucky to have a faith in God which gives me hope and assurance that things will be better,and I also know that music, particularly playing it, can help express some of these emotions.Certainly, music through the crisis was a wonderful, enjoyable escape for meand one I shared with my family and my band family through our online recordings.Julian of Norwich was an anchoress in the 14th Century.She set herself apart for God and spent a lot of time in prayer.Interestingly, she was the first published woman in the English language.Julian of Norwich is quoted as saying "all shall be well, all shall be well,and all manner of thing shall be well." The paraphrase of this spurred me on to develop this piece for brass band.Hopefully you will also find that the music portrays the worries and trials of this uniquetime through the natural minor key, with the rhythm hinting towards the phrase"All shall be well" and then the dawning transition to the major keyfollowed by a triumphant ending with the whole band joining together.Thanks to Adam Cable and the Martlesham Brass family for support and encouragement always.Thanks also to Alan Fernie and his supportive critique of my initial efforts.LM931 - ISMN : 9790570009312

DescriptionThis short work for brass band was written in 1982 for a concert to celebrate the 80th birthday of Harry Mortimer, one of the great figures in the world of brass bands. Not surprisingly, it references the well-known song Happy Birthday, in a breezy, up-tempo, short concert prelude.The premiere was given at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester by the Fodens Band, conducted by Howard Snell.In 2014 the composer revised it for a trip to the North American Brass Band Championships, where it was performed, also as an 80th birthday tribute, this time to the composer's brother Bram; it was subsequently dedicated to both Harry Mortimer and Bram Gregson.For more information on Edward Gregson's music please visit the composer's website: www.edwardgregson.com
