£44.89Boreas: The North Wind (Brass Band) Derek Jenkins
Boreas was an ancient Greek deity personifying the north wind. He was a winged god of ruthless disposition, which was rivaled only by the harsh wintry winds at his command. Boreas fell in love with Orithyia, the King's daughter. Contrary to his genuine nature, he attempted to woo her with sweet words of devotion. His efforts were in vain, and Orithyia failed to yield to his advances. With this rejection, Boreas's temper flared and he, once again, was overcome by his icy and merciless nature. Like Boreas, this work begins with slow, lyrical lines that quickly fade into an unrelenting fury of anger. Moments reminiscent of Boreas's words of affection appear, but they are quickly washed away as the piece escalates. This arrangement was written for Joseph Parisi and the Fountain City Brass Band as a small token of thanks. The original version for wind ensemble was commissioned by and written for Timothy Shade and the Bethel College Wind Ensemble. First heard in the original 1967 movie, this familiar tune is featured again in the acclaimed 2016 version. In this clever arrangement for band, the arranger utilizes a peppy 2-beat style, beginning with the trombones taking the melody. Every section of the band soon gets into the act, including a solo or soli for tuba, and a brief slower section for a Dixieland combo leading to the rousing finish. This song is guaranteed to be a highlight at any concert. Note: whilst the demo video demonstrates the concert band arrangement, the version available to purchase on this website is the brass band transcription by Christopher Bond.

As the finale to the band's programme, the music depicts the fierce final battle between Scar and Simba as the latter aims to overthrow his wicked uncle and retaks control of the pride lands.

DURATION: 3 minutes. DIFFICULTY: 3rd+. 'Under the Cover of Night' was composed for BD1 Brass as part of a set of music inspired by the fairytale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. . In BD1's adaption of the fairytale, Maid Marian is held hostage by the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and it is up to Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men to rescue her from captivity. This mysterious bluesy feature for Flugel, Drum Kit and Euphonium & Baritone section paints the picture of the group quietly creeping around in their attempt to rescue Marian. Within the music, there is opportunity for staging, with the Merry Men (Euphoniums & Baritones) moving around the band to reach Marian (Flugel) on the other side of the hall.

DURATION: 4 minutes. DIFFICULTY: Moderate. 'As The World Falls Apart' was composed for David Maxted as part of the programme for his BMus Final Recital at the RNCM in May 2017. The work was composed in a time of real political and social divide, with chaos only ever seeming minutes away, and the base of the piece is one of serenity and traniquility amongst the bedlam which is occurring around us all. Originally, the work was planned to be a totally free unaccompanied work for solo horn, however I wanted to make use of the vast space the RNCM concert hall can offer with the surround-sound speakers and decided to utilise a short sound effect track to enhance the feeling of chaos as the music reaches it's peak in dynamic and intensity. We sail the ocean with stubborn, hardworking but weak hearted Flemish fishermen to the Northern parts of the Atlantic. A sailor is leaving his wife or girlfriend not knowing if he is going to come back soon. Leaving for good fishing grounds around Iceland. This sad song(the first line of the text says; The wind that blows from the east, my love, is not going to blow for ever) is a solo for flugelhorn accompanied by the whole lower brass section. In a certain way of counterpoint tenorhorns, baritones and euphoniums are woven around thesoloist. The warmth from these saxhorn section is coloured by some chords from trombones and a quite virtuosi marimba line.

This piece is a good concert-opener or a character piece.Beware of the changing articulations in this piece, the contrast between marcato and legato is a vital part of the character of the piece.
