This set includes three fanfares by Edward Gregson for symphonic brass and percussion ensemble:Fanfare for a New EraFanfare for the NorthFanfare for EuropeFanfare for a New Era: This fanfare was commissioned by Lady Sheila Stoller to celebrate the opening of the Stoller Hall at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester (UK). It is dedicated to Sir Norman Stoller, who generously donated the funding for the new concert hall. It was first performed by students of Chetham's School of Music, conducted by Stephen Threlfall, at the Royal Opening of the Stoller Hall on 24 April 2017. Ideally, the fanfare should be performed using as much spatial arrangement as possible, so that the antiphonal effects are heard to their best advantage. Whatever the chosen lay-out, the 1st Trumpet should be positioned off-stage in a suitable position. This could be a rear balcony if the venue is not too large, or in a side balcony in a larger concert hall. Duration: 3.00Fanfare for the North: This fanfare was commissioned by the Gateshead Garden Festival of 1990 and was first performed by London Brass Virtuosi, directed by David Honeyball, at the Royal Opening by HM The Queen. Its four-note motif (G, A, E, D), which is heard throughout the fanfare, is derived from the letters of 'Gateshead'. Duration: 1.15Fanfare for Europe: This fanfare was specially commissioned for two concerts celebrating the UK's entry into Europe (or the European Economic Community as it was then known) in 1973. The first performances were given at York Minister and the Royal Albert Hall, London, in January 1973. The fanfare was also featured as the opening music for the first episode of a series of short documentary programmes made for BBC Radio 4 in 2018 by Mark Mardell entitled Brexit: A Love Story? Fanfare of Joy was commissioned by the Burbage Band (Buxton) and its conductor Steven Critchlow in 2017. Based on Joy to the World and The First Nowell, this spectacular work opens with a majestic brass fanfare, before breaking in a Celtic-style dance which builds to a dramatic conclusion. The fanfare opening serves to announce the arrival of something special. In this case, the fanfare announces the arrival of Christmas, a time of joy and celebration. The Celtic-style dance is a lively and energetic movement that captures the spirit of Christmas. The music is full of syncopated rhythms and intricate melodies, driven by percussion. The final movement of the piece is a dramatic conclusion that brings the work to a rousing finish. The music is full of excitement and energy, and a fitting celebration of the Christmas season. DescriptionComposer's NoteThe Fanfare has been designed to be partly antiphonal, with four separate brass 'choirs' initially playing their own music, and so some spatial separation is desirable. Soprano and solo cornets should be placed centrally, standing behind the rest of the band - or in some venues could even be placed off-stage in a side balcony, but still close to the band. If the Fanfare is played by a contesting size band, one of the solo cornets should play the 1st cornet part together with the usual player ie the number of players on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd cornet parts should be equal. Otherwise the number of players in each of the two cornet 'choirs' is at the discretion of the conductor. The Tubular Bells accompanying the cornets 1-3 group should be placed close to that group. See inside back cover for suggested band formation.The style of playing should replicate that of symphonic brass, with a minimum of vibrato and with long notes being sustained without decaying.Programme NoteCommissioned in 2020 by Youth Brass 2000, Fanfare for a New Era was designed to be partly antiphonal - thus the separation of the band into four brass 'choirs', each with their own percussion accompaniment. First, soprano and solo cornets, rather like heraldic trumpeters, announce the main idea, majestic in character. Then horns, baritones, and euphoniums, with timpani, enter with stately figurations. Next, the heraldic trumpeters usher in trombones and tubas, to the accompaniment of tom-toms and snare drum, presenting a faster and rhythmic dance-like theme. Finally, the remaining cornets amplify the pealing of bells. Fanfare of a Nation (2012) was commissioned by the Greater Gwent Youth Brass Ensemble as a short fanfare originally for ten players, and was performed in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II & The Duke of Edinburgh on the occasion of their visit to Wales to mark the Diamond Jubilee last year, under its original title The Royal Diamond Jubilee Fanfare. Since arranged for brass band and performed throughout the UK including by Black Dyke Band in Cardiff, this short work mesmerizes, dazzles and utilizes the fanfare effects so often associated with the brass family. Available to purchase for Brass Band or Brass Ensemble (10 players plus 1 percussion). The brass ensemble version is scored as follows: 4 x Trumpets, 1 x Horn in F, 3 x Tenor Trombones, 1 x Bass Trombone, 1 x Tuba, 1 x Percussion. Trumpet 1 is supplied in both E-flat & B-flat, Horn in F is supplied in E-flat, Tenor Trombone and Tuba parts are supplied in both bass and treble clef.

Occasion was published especially for the National Youth Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on 4th October, 1986.Occasion for Brass Band is in four movements: Fanfare, Festivities, Elegy and Dance. The opening Fanfare was originally written as a Wedding Fanfare for Paul and Hazel Patterson in 1981, while the Elegy and Dance were commissioned as a test-piece for the first Westsound/Ayrshire Invitation Contest in 1982 for the leading bands in Scotland. Festivities was therefore written last, to complete the work and give it its essentially 'festive' character. Except for the Elegy, which is contemplative, the music throughout is extrovert and joyful. The opening Fanfare may be performed separately - of the Fanfare may be left out entirely, making the work a three movement Suite.Duration: 11 minutes
