ABOUT THIS PIECE: Upon being asked to write a Christmas musical for his church, Mark Lowry penned a series of monologues based on Christmas Songs including a conversation with Mary about the birth and life of her Son, Jesus. Lowry worked on the lyrics for years until he approached southern gospel singer-songwriter and harmonica player, Buddy Greene. Greene agreed to pen music for his words, completing the instrumentation within a few days. The result is this new-age Christmas classic: 'Mary Did You Know". "When Roger Argente approached me to write a composition for his Spanish flavoured brass project, he made the suggestion that a Tango, althoughmore Argentinian than Spanish, would fit in well with the overall concept. I have always been a very big fan of the music of Argentinian composerAstor Piazzolla and particularly the way that the Tango could be combined with jazz. A favourite recording of mine is of Piazzolla himselfperforming (on the bandoneon) with the jazz saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. Roger and I both thought it would be a good idea to let some of themusicians in the ensemble take improvised solos. As the composing progressed, a fugato also emerged hence the title Fugatango."

Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) was a famous conductor and composer when he wrote Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Ordens (Solemn Entrance of the Knights of the Order of Saint John) in 1909. One of only a handful of his works written exclusively for winds, Strauss composed Feierlicher Einzug for the investiture ceremonies of the Order of St. John, a Christian military order that was founded in Jerusalem in 1023 to care for poor, sick, or injured pilgrims journeying to the Holy Land.Strauss scored Feierlicher Einzug (TrV 224) for a large ensemble of fifteen trumpets, four horns, four trombones, two tubas and timpani. He saw enough potential in its stately character and majestic conclusion to produce a version for symphony orchestra with organ and it has been arranged for a variety of brass ensembles with or without organ since then.This version for British style brass band was adapted from the original in 1990 by Paul Hindmarsh for the exclusive use of Besses o' th' Barn Band, of which he was then the musical director. Now that the music of Richard Strauss published in his lifetime is in the public domain, Solemn Procession, as it has been rendered in English, can be enjoyed by all brass bands and their audiences.- Paul HindmarshDuration: 6.00

This set includes two short fanfares for six-piece brass ensemble, Flourish for an Occasion and Fanfare for PL, written for 3 Trumpets in Bb and 3 Trombones (2 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombones)Flourish for an Occasion: This short fanfare, scored for three trumpets and three trombones, was written in 1981 for the wedding of Paul and Hazel Patterson. Paul was a fellow student of the composer at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1960's. The Flourish was later used in a version for brass band in a work entitled Occasion. £40.00Abide With Me (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score and Parts)
My arrangement of William H. Monk's tune of 1861, uses the euphonium soloist as the central figure for the melodic line in the three verses. Surrounding the solo line is an irregular pulsed figure in the percussion to give the music an unsettled feel whilst the muted ensemble lightly colour the melodic contour of the soloist. From the low beginnings of the piece, where no high instrumentation is used, we are led through the darkened texture to a bright finale, although the sense of the forbidding is always present.Abide With Me has always been a favourite hymn of mine and it was when watching the film 28 Days Later that I believed it would make a rather striking arrangement for brass band. This was confirmed further when the hymn was used at the 2012 opening ceremony of the London Olympics. The juxtaposition between the static, slow moving melody and the rhythmic effects of the dancers was something that I thought could be captured in an arrangement.- Paul McGheeDuration: 5.00
