Concert Overture for Brass BandIn the year 1340 in the town of Ghent, a son was born to Edward III King of England and his Queen Phillipa. The boy, afterwards known as John O'Gaunt (Ghent) grew up to be a warrior and before he was 20 he was fighting in France beside his brother, the Black Prince. For many years he was occupied with the wars in France and Spain and was seldom in England. His first two marriages brought him great riches and position, but the love of his life was Catherine Swynford, who bore him four children. Whilst he was away , his Palace of Savoy was burnt to the ground by the mob during the Peasant's Revolt. Finally in 1394 he returned home and married Catherine, for whom he felt a strong affection since her first marriage in St. Clement Danes Church in the Strand, many years before. Mendelssohn conducted the first English performance of 'Elijah' on 26 August 1846 at Birmingham Town Hall and it was immediately acclaimed a classic of the genre. This Aria, O' Rest In The Lord, is a classic for alto voice and therefore transposes nicely for the Tenor Horn. In this arrangement the whole Tenor Horn section plays the alto part to produce a sublime timbre. This is a fantastic feature piece for any concert.

Based on "God So Loved The World" from John Stainer's "Crucifixion".In the 19th century, the English composer John Stainer wrote an oratorio named "The Crucifixion". It contains a beautiful a capella setting of the Biblical text from John chapter 3 verses 16 & 17. Although I have added a few obligati and counter subjects, and a short fugal link, for the most part, I have not tried to add too much to a beautiful piece of traditional harmony. What I have done, is to try to emphasise the subtle changes of tone colour in the unique sound of the brass band. "Meditation" is on the latest CD from Weston Brass. Coventry Carol - Traditional - Len Jenkins based on an arrangement by John Dankworth
Originally arranged SATB by John Dankworth, now arranged for Brass Band.This lovely but very melancholy carol was originally associated with the English Mystery Plays which were put on every year around the 1600s by the guilds of the various towns to illustrate Bible stories.The story of the 'carol' is effectively The Massacre of the Innocents (Matthew 2:16). King Herod murdered three of his own sons and called for the slaying of all new-born boys....

Mele Kalikimaka - Robert Alex Anderson - Len Jenkins
Mele Kalikimaka is an Hawaiian-themed Christmas song, written in 1949 by Robert Alex Anderson. The song takes its title from the Hawaiian phrase, "Mele Kalikimaka" meaning ''Merry Christmas'' Hawaiian has a different language system, and does not have the 'r'or 's' we have in English - thus our "Merry Christmas" becomes "Mele Kalikimaka". This arrangement offers a very different view of Christmas from the norm, which can be refreshing in a Concert of traditional carols, and allows for a solo feature section, if required, for Kazoos - great fun!

Dance On (Je me sens bien aupres de toi) - Adams, Murtagh, Murtagh & Stellman - Len Jenkins
"Dance On" is probably best remembered in the UK by two versions. One by the Shadows which went to Number 1 in the UK Singles chart and the other by Kathy Kirby which made number 11 in the 1963 UK charts. The other side of the Channel, in France, Petula Clark recorded the song in French ("Je me sens bien aupres de toi") and Italian ("Sto volentieri con te") which made the Top 5 of the French and Italian charts. She also recorded an English version for album release on the Canadian market. The infectious rhythm will get you tapping your feet or even getting up to dance. It's a real bopping number from the 60's, and well within the capabilities of most bands. Enjoy.

A Lazy Afternoon - Len Jenkins - Len Jenkins
'A Lazy Afternoon' brings to mind a lazy hot day in summer, possibly starting with a short drive out to somewhere pleasant for an afternoon's picnic. It is accepted that a drive out is now something many would choose to avoid, especially at busy weekends, but one can perhaps dream of open un-cluttered roads with no rush to get there. As such, this piece is ideal for the local summer fete. It has a gentle style that so befits an English village fete, recalling an era when things did not need to be so immediate and may thereby help to give a perfect respite from the everyday 'rush and tear'. As with many of Wobbleco's pieces, this is aimed at the average town and village band, and is within the reasonable playing capabilities of its members.
