    Kolo (Brass Band) Derek Jenkins

'A kolo,' which translates to round or circle, is a fast and lively traditional folk dance that originated in the Balkans. The music accompanying a kolo dance is characteristically quite repetitive. The primary melodic material is introduced at the beginning, and it continues to appear and reappear throughout the duration of the dance. Several composers, including Antonin Dvorak, have adapted the kolo into concert pieces for orchestra. These are often fast and exhilarating showpieces that portray the virtuosity of the entire ensemble. This work entitled Kolo, by Derek Jenkins, continues this concert adaption tradition, and it follows the basic structure of the traditional dance with the exception of the middle section. The composer writes: 'I was fortunate to spend about two weeks in Zagreb and several days in Dubrovnik during the spring of 2009. Looking out upon the Adriatic Sea atop of Dubrovnik's historic city wall, I was struck by an overwhelming sense of tranquility, and that feeling has become the strongest association I have with my time in Croatia. 'In order to depict this musically, I forewent the continuation of the fast and lively character of the middle section of my Kolo and instead replaced it with music that is peaceful and reflective. The melody used in this slow section comes from a folk song, "Oj, mla?'ano mlado mom(ce)," in Bela Bartok and Albert B. Lord's folksong collection Serbo-Croatian Folk Songs. This middle section was my chance to return, if only in my mind, to the Adriatic coast.' The original concert band version was commissioned by Lee Hartman and the Mid America Freedom Band. Grieg Variations - Jonathan Bates

DURATION: 12'30". DIFFICULTY: 2nd+. . 'Grieg Variations' is a through-composed work in the traditional style of a 'theme & variations'. The work opens with the main melodic fragment featured throughout Grieg Variations which comes from Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No.2; the final movement - 'Solveig's Song'. . This theme is followed by a set of 9 variations, each taking inspiration from various melodies and styles found within the Peer Gynt Suite. The first variation, a light-footed scherzo based upon the tonal line of Solveig's Song is followed by an 'Alla marcia' variation - in which the music is inspired by the 2nd movement - 'Arab Dance' - of the original suite. The 3rd variation takes a far darker and more aggressive turn in a variation set around the music of the 1st movement of the Peer Gynt Suite before a relaxation into a solemne revisiting of the original theme. Opening with a sombre and longing solo for Flugel horn, the focal point of this 4th variation is an extended solo for the Solo Euphonium, marked 'molto espressivo'. The new material here is used as a theme throughout this variation, being reprised by the full band immediately after as the music builds to a climax point at the top of the musical line. . Following this, there are 2 cadenzas for the Solo Horn and Solo Cornet respectively; the former inspired by the thematic material of Solveig's Song, and the latter from the Oboe cadenza at the beginning of Grieg's '2 Lyric Pieces, Op.68'. These cadenzas lead swiftly into the 7th variation, a bustling rhyhm-driven movement set in complex time. The 3rd movement of the Peer Gynt Suite No.2 - 'Peer Gynt's Homecoming' - makes it's first appearance in variation 8 in a triumphant battle-like setting before a combination of both this material and the Solveig's Song combine to bring Grieg Variations to it's close -not without a little nod to potentially Grieg's most famous work - In The Hall of the Mountain King. . .

    Milestone - Peter Meechan

Milestone is a concerto commissioned by Mark Wilkinson (with funds provided by the Arts Council England) to celebrate 21 years as Principal Cornet with Fodens Band. In three movements, the work is intended to not only demonstrate the soloista??s virtuosic skills, but also his ability to communicate to the audience. The first movement, titled Milestone, combines sections of driving rhythms (intended to represent Marka??s years of continuing hard work), in the accompaniment with long legato phrases from the soloist interspersed with dexterous, virtuosic, passages. The second movement, Song, features a simple chord sequence, over which the soloist a??singsa? a melody, each time varying and each time becoming more expressive, leading to an emotional climax. The final movement, Twenty One, is a quasi-celebratory dance. Opening with the band clapping, the soloist weaves their way through the various textures in the band. Occasionally making both a musical and metaphorical nod to the industrious nature of the first movement, the chord sequence of the second movement also re-appears, before a brief coda takes us to the conclusion of the work.

Seaside Rendezvous - Freddie Mercury - Iain McKnight

There was no greater showman in the world of rock than Freddie Mercury and, for many, no greater group than Queen. The release in 2018 of the film Bohemian Rhapsody brought the sounds of Queen to a new generation as well as providing a welcome dose of musical reminiscence for fans across the world. As well as an astonishingly gifted performer, Freddie Mercury was an equally adept composer, drawing upon his early musical training as a classical pianist as well as his eclectic musical tastes to create songs of immense character and imagination. With its echoes of music hall, vaudeville and no small amount of saucy postcard humour, Seaside Rendezvous is from the band's fourth studio album, A Night at the Opera, released in 1975. The song is so complex and makes such extensive use of multi-tracking and specially recorded effects - the tap dance segment, for example, was created by Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor ‘performing' on the mixing desk with thimbles on their fingers - that Queen never performed it live.Colourfully scored and featuring numerous momentary solos around the band - including a feature for the cornet section on kazoos - this arrangement was made for Foden's Band and featured as part of their programme for the 2018 Brass in Concert Championships at Sage Gateshead. The band subsequently recorded it on their 2019 CD, Trials and Triumphs.
