£60.99Cityscape - Jan Hadermann
Cityscape was commissioned for the 't Stad Geblazen event, which took place during the weekend of European Heritage Days in 2024.This short concert piece describes the impressions given when approaching and visiting the beautiful Belgian city of Antwerp from the north across the river Scheldt. We first pass the busy bustle of the harbour, home to the impressive Port House. Then the old city comes into view: the graceful cathedral tower, surrounded by smaller church spires and modern buildings, dominates the distinctive skyline. After setting foot ashore, we are struck by the beautiful way the medieval buildings here blend harmoniously with modern architecture. Our walk through the city continues: we visit the serene cathedral and are impressed by the picturesque facades of and around the city hall, as well as the Brabo Fountain on the Grote Markt (Large Market Square). Finally, it is time to enjoy the merriment taking place on the many squares of the lively city centre.

The geographical position of Plymouth (the composer's home city) means that, at various times in history, the city has been the United Kingdom's first line of defence. A series of forts around the coast bears testimony to this and forts have featured on the city's coat of arms ever since. However, the city's forefathers believed that physical security was worthless without a faith in God's protection and this is reflected in the city motto; Turris fortissima est nomen Jehovah (The name of Jehovah is our strongest tower) (Proverbs 18:10). Written for Enfield Citadel Band's tour of the USA in 2007, the music attempts to portray this assurance with the use of the tune Ein' Fest Burg (A mighty fortress is our God) along with the more contemporary Blessed be the Name of the Lord and Shout to the Lord. There is also an apt reference to Dean Goffin's My Strength, My Tower as the music builds to its dramatic final bars.

'Morning Scene - Awakening': the quiet solitude of a sunrise, birdsong, and empty streets can betray the crowded jungle of city life. These are the last moments of sleep before the alarm goes off and the coffee goes on. 'Faces in Motion': The pavements come alive, streets fill with cars, office buildings open, the rush hour is on - and everyone is late! 'Museum Visit': To step into a museum is to visit another world. Looking at what we've been and where we've been, there's always a sense of awe at how much has gone before; and the realisation of how much there is yet to come... 'Nightlife': After hours is not the time to slow down, for the city never really sleeps. Nightclubs open, and the jazz circuit is alive with swinging sounds. This is the soul of the city. 2246: Christmas Prelude - David's City (Noel Jones)In 2 Samuel 5, we read of David's anointing as King of Israel at the age of thirty, a reign that lasted for forty years. Bethlehem was known as 'David's city' because he was born there and worked as a shepherd on the nearby hills. Verses 1, 2 and 5 of Once in Royal David's City (C.C. 68) are featured in this Christmas Prelude. There are also brief references to the carols O come, all ye faithful and O little town of Bethlehem between verses.2247: Cornet and Euphonium Duet - This Kingdom (Stephen Bulla)Geoff Bullock's song, This Kingdom, has been made well known by the American gospel singer Ron Kenoly. Stephen Bulla wrote this duet for a Brass Spectacular concert held in Basel, Switzerland, in May 2019.2248: Wonder (Stephen Gibson)When we stop to consider the mystery of God's love for each one of us, its enormity can only cause us to wonder. The opening bars of this music create an atmosphere, using a rolling accompaniment underneath sustained, music and chromatic Cornets, setting the style for the entire piece. Occasional references to Albert E. Webber's chorus Can you wonder? are heard throughout.2249: O to love thee! (Michael Davis)This piece takes its title from the first verse of Francis Bottome's words, Precious Jesus, O to love thee! The introduction establishes the baroque form of a prelude which leads into the tune Glory to the lamb (T.B. 327). Following a brief interlude, the melody is passed through several sections of the band, with delicate countermelodies in the Flugel and Horns. The majestic ending eventually comes to rest on the final tonic chord.

Joni Mitchell's Both Sides, Now is a timeless reflection on the shifting landscapes of life, love, and self-understanding. First released in 1969, this iconic song has become a signature of Mitchell's extraordinary songwriting, capturing the delicate interplay between youthful innocence and hard-earned wisdom. With its poignant lyrics and haunting melody, Both Sides, Now continues to resonate across generations. This evocative brass band arrangement by Andrew Wainwright was commissioned by the Fountain City Brass Band for its 2023 tour of England, including a performance at the prestigious Brass in Concert Championships. Featuring prominent solos for baritone and flugel horn, the arrangement makes full use of their lyrical warmth and tonal richness.
