Aberystwyth - Joseph Parry - Ed Keeley

This arrangement is based on the famous Welsh hymn tune Aberystwyth by Joseph Parry. Composed in the late nineteenth century whilst Parry was Professor of Music at Aberystwyth University. The tune is a powerful example of the expressive style of Welsh chapel music. Most widely known today as the setting for Charles Wesley's hymn "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," the melody is notable for its haunting minor key, sweeping phrases and dramatic climax. These qualities translate naturally to the warm, resonant and warm timbre of the brass band. This setting seeks to capture both the solemn dignity and emotional depth of the original tune. Rich harmonic textures and the sonorous colours of the brass band highlight the melody's expressive contours, building towards a broad and noble climax while preserving the reflective and haunting character of the hymn.

Canterbury Chorale - Jan Van der Roost

This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composer's own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of the English city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases for several instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an "ad libitum" organ part adds an extra richness, colour and powerto this piece, making it sound even more broad and grand.

    West Wind - Oliver Waespi

West Wind is structured in three parts, each bearing a subtitle drawn from poems of Emily Bronte (1818-1848). Poetry of the Romantic period, Bronte's in particular, often presents a gentle, almost innocent surface, beneath which lies the most elemental and volatile emotional forces capable of erupting at any moment.Accordingly, the opening movement, West-wind, in the glory and pride!, begins with a mellow, warm soundscape, underpinned by lightly pulsating patterns, almost like an aquarelle. Gradually however, the music transitions into far rougher, forward-driven gestures - turbulent, restless, and at times unpredictable, much like the west wind itself. The ensuing Adagio reflects on the poem Stars, in which a fundamental tension between exaltation and regret, another recurring feature of Bronte's poetry, is palpable throughout. Introspective solo and chamber music statements give way to a broad ecstatic sound field involving the full ensemble, before finally receding into a solitary euphonium soliloquy. The final movement, Wild words of an ancient song, takes the form of an extended rondo-scherzo, driven by virtuosic, perpetual motion. The sense of relentless pursuit bears a nod to The Boy on the Moor by the German poet Annette von Droste-Hulshoff, a contemporary of Bronte who explored similar narratives, albeit from a different perspective.Although certain core musical elements recur - pulsating patterns, a chorale, a tone row - the work is guided less by systematic symphonic development than by an intuitive stream of variants. These generate a sequence of metamorphoses that illuminate the material from shifting vantage points, projecting the emotional landscapes of Romantic poetry into the present day.West Wind was commissioned by the Flowers Band and was first performed under Musical Director Paul Holland, at the 2026 European Brass Band Championships in Linz (AT), where they also became European Champions.

The Swan on the Hill - Jan Van der Roost

This stately opening work begins in the low register with a broad main theme from the low brass immediately setting the tone. Gradually other sections and registers enter and despite retaining a majestic character the rhythmic element becomes more active. This work makes truly creative use of sound, without great virtuosity or complexity, but maintains a good balance between static and dynamic elements.

Toccata Festiva - Jan Van der Roost

'Toccata Festiva' was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the 'Toccata Festiva': on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

Slavia - Jan Van der Roost

Jan Van der Roost originally composed each and every note of 'Slavia' (as in case in 'Puszta', 'Rikudim' and 'A Highland Rhapsody'). Consequently, 'Slavia' does not contain any arrangement of existing tunes, but is an original composition 'in the style of...'. The introduction has an ABA structure and exposes a broad melodic line. Following a short cadenza, there is a second movement in a fast and fiery tempo. The tempi increase, gradually culminating in an exciting final climax, making this 'Slavonic Rhapsody' a spell-binding experience to the very last note.

Don't Cry For Me Argentina - Andrew Lloyd Webber - Ron Sebregts

Don't Cry For Me Argentina is the best-known song from the 1976 musical Evita. It was sung by Eva Peron when she was addressing the crowds amassed in the square below her balcony. More recently it was a hit for Madonna, who sang it in the 1996 film version of Evita. This arrangement for Brass Band retains the broad emotive melody of the original together with its intense emotion.
