Punchinellie - William Rimmer - Jonathan Bates

Kick start your programme with music from the Brass Band march king???of sorts! The opening bars of 'Punchinello" are amongst the most famous written in any march, however what follows them in this arrangement will certainly raise a few eyebrows and chuckles from your audience. The brilliance of William Rimmer descends into the comedy tune of the famous elephant (& your trombonists are let loose with the trunk calls!). An awesome, tongue in cheek arrangement that would suit both concerts & entertainments contests (watch out for the odd weasel popping up too!).

    Eminence

Eminence was commissioned by Eminence Brass for inclusion in their 2011 programme at the Durham International Brass Festival. The work is in ternary form: opening with a fast-paced heraldic fanfare and theme, which is followed in contrast by a slow and solemn paced habanera. A reprise of the opening theme, firstly in minor form and then in its original major setting, brings this jaunty concert item to a brisk conclusion. Eminence aims to combine technical brilliance with the melodic quality of both the instrument and performer. It is featured on the Eminence Brass CD release: Jewels.

    The Descent

The Descent takes its inspiration from Victorian author Jules Verne; specifically, his work Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.In Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, Professor Arronax finds himself a prisoner of the mysterious Captain Nemo, on a remarkable submarine called the Nautilus. Nemo is one of Verne's most memorable characters. He's a man who has turned his back on the world, and his name - Nemo - means 'No Man.' He has vowed never to set foot on dry land ever again. Verne gives his hero's brilliance and benevolence a dark underside - the man's obsessive hate for Empires and Imperialism. Captain Nemo is a genius, an engineer, an artist, an athlete, sometimes a pacifist, sometimes a righter of wrongs, sometimes an out and out villain, and he invented the Nautilus. The Descent is based on the idea of a descent to the depths of the ocean in the Nautilus with Captain Nemo, with the cornet soloist expressing both the anguish and reflective sides of the character. On one hand, a troubled and agitated figure, juxtaposed with the reflective memories of his homeland, children, mother and father. The work was written for and commissioned by Flowers Band as part of their programme of music at Brass in Concert 2019.

Concerto for Tenor Horn - Lucy Pankhurst

I wrote this tenor horn concerto for Owen Farr in 2002, whilst we were both studying at the RNCM in Manchester. I had never heard a brass player like Owen before and was stunned by his technical brilliance as well as his musicality. Also, being at college myself, and exploring the horn repertoire in more detail, I wanted to write something which showed the versatility of the instrument and used more of the extreme range. This was my first attempt at a large-scale work.I actually gave the premiere of the 2nd movement in my final degree recital, but Owen gave the first official premiere of the full work at Birmingham Conservatoire in 2005.

    Candide Overture - Bernstein, L.

This Overture, by Leonard Bernstein, is a vivacious and high-speed introduction to the comic opera of the same name. With effervescent hustle and bustle, and noisy outbursts succeeding spacious melodies... and so on... the effect of so much invention and brilliance is there for all to hear.

    Alchemists' Fire - Lucy Pankhurst

An original composition from Lucy Pankhurst and Winner of the 2011 John Golland Award, receiving its premiere at the RNCM Festival of Brass that same year.It is a complex, energetic and invigorating major work for brass band, and one which rightly demands attention through its intricate scoring, impact-making effects and bubbling brilliance!Comments from the composer on the work’s title and its multi-purpose influence and inspiration upon her composition:“The phrase “Alchemists’ Fire” has several possible connotations:Firstly, Alchemists' Fire is a magical weapon featured in the Dungeons & Dragon role playing game. It is a potion, so can be used to splash, throw or pour onto a target, dealing fire damage if it hits successfully. The second possible meaning comes from an historical source, where it was also known as Greek Fire, from which the D&D element takes its influence. This was an incendiary weapon used by the Byzantine Empire, typically used in naval battles to great effect, as it could continue to burn on water. It provided a technological advantage and was responsible for many key Byzantine victories. The manufacture of this 'fire' was kept a deadly secret; so much so that the formula was eventually lost and contemporary scientists and historians can only speculate at what the chemical make-up might have been. The final implication is a much more visual and sensory concept; that of the fire actually used by the Alchemist in his work - raging, dangerous and white-hot. Some sections of the work reflect the idea of 'magic' and ongoing experiments, some successful, some failing dangerously, in a cacophony of pops, fizzes and explosions amidst furious heat and brief moments of calm as the fire slowly cools, sizzling with residual components and elemental energy.”
