    Myte - Myth - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Commissioned by Radoy Brass for their 20 years anniversary. This version was first performed by Manger Skulemusikklag in 2005. The Work is devided into Five Scenes: 1. Sverdet (The Sword) 3:45 2. Advarsel - fra en vis mann (Warning - from a Wise Man) 2:30 3. Dragen (The Dragon) 3:00 4. Advarsel II - fra syngende fugler (Warning II - from singing birds) 1:35 5. Gull - forbannelsen (Gold - The Curse) 2:50 Total durata 13:30 This work is based on five scenes from the tale about "Sigurd Favnesbane" (Sigurd the dragonslayer). Moods and atmospheres in the piece represent my way of retelling the old myth. 1. The Sword The dwarf blacksmith Regin is hammering and sharpening the edges of the magical sword Gram. After three attempts the sword is finally sharp enough to kill a dragon. 2. Warning - from a Wise man Richard Wagners opera Sigfried is based on the same story. In the opera the hero get warned by a wise man. He tells the secret of how to survive an attack of the dragon by hiding in a hole in the pathway and then kill the dragon with the sword as the dragon passes on its way to the river to drink water. 3. Dragon The Dragon (Favne) guards a fantastic treasure, but he is also the brother of the blacksmith Regin. Favne get killed and his blood flows slowly while he laments (trombone/bass trombone). 4. Warning II - from singing birds While frying the heart, Sigurd burns his thumb and put it into his mouth to cool it down. Then he swallow a drop of fresh magic dragon blood which transfers the ability to understand the birdlanguage. The birds sing warnings to Sigurd telling him that Regin will betray him and later kill him. Sigurd then kills Regin instead. 5. Gold - the Curse Sigurd takes the gold treasure and escapes on the horseback of Grane. But his robbery of the gold lead him into trouble: The gold is banned and a curse will hit everyone who takes it... Myth is a programmatic work where the story is quite clearly illustrated throughout the piece: In the first movement you can hear the blacksmith working with hammer on ambolt while the heat is intense from the glows. The dwarf has got his own theme i lower brass (bar 4-5). The hero Sigurd has his own identifying chord (2 bars before F). The chord is also a symbol of the sword. In the second movement the warning from the wise man is expressed in the lyric bass line. The airblow in instruments illustrate the dragon Favne on his way out of his cave, and later the blood flows slowly. The dragon takes his last deep breath after a painful duet in trombones. The birds sing their motifs (lightly, but not cheerful though), until Sigurd cuts the head off Regin and it hits the ground. The last movement describes the atmosphere and state of mind as the curse infects the obsessed thief.

Enter the Galaxies - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Enter the Galaxies paints a musical picture of the experiences and excitement space exploration has to offer. The music begins with a 'space-like' whirlwind of triplets and semiquavers from the cornets and glockenspiel which accompanies a fanfare from the 'middle' of the band. This quickly leads into a presto section introducing the lyrical principal horn as the soloist. The horn is followed by the euphonium as the flowing melody lines are passed around, juxtaposed by a virtuosic counter-line from the principal cornet. The journey into the unknown is taken up a gear as the music modulates through a variety of keys before featuring the back row cornets playing the central melodic motif. From this point the music grows in intensity before the euphonium and soprano cornet 'lift off' into the finale with glissandi to concert Cs.Following a brief coda, the music comes to a climactic end using the melodic intervals heard throughout the piece with an augmented 5th resolving to the dominant 5th and finally onto a brilliant F major chord to close.Enter the Galaxies is dedicated to Cory Band and received its premi?re in November 2008 at The Sage, Gateshead, as part of the band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Chamionships. The piece has subsequently been featured as the title track to a CD to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Cory Band.

On Winter Hill - Dan Price

Winter Hill is situated in the North West of England within the West Pennine Moors. It is a popular destination for walkers and on a clear day it offers views across Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, the Isle of Man, the Cumbrian Mountains and the Peak District. The hill is well named as there is an ever-present blusteriness even during the summer. On Winter Hill is an evocative concert item for solo euphonium and brass band which tells the story of a journey, in music, to the summit of the hill. The work opens with a quiet ostinato on solo cornets which is a musical interpretation of the swirling wind dancing around the peak of the summit. The wind is ever present on the hill and so is the ostinato building in volume and intensity as the journey progresses. The solo line uses modal writing and is fashioned as a ‘folksong without words' and gives work a feeling of melancholy and of ‘days gone by'. Perhaps the listener can imagine looking out from the side of the hill across the valley towards the now silent chimneys of industry. The summit of the hill is finally reached six bars before Figure G, which is the moment you walk into the wall of wind and sound that takes your breath away for a moment, but gives you an immense sense of achievement. The music here should be full and rich giving the soloist a moment to catch their breath. The work closes at the start of the descent from that moment you step off the peak of the hill and you are already back in a different world.

    Tientos y Danzas

“Tientos y Danzas” is a suite in four movements and was written especially for Superbrass. It is not literally descriptive, but conjures up a breezy, festive atmosphere. The title “Tientos” stems from the fact that a lot of the brass writing is reminiscent of virtuosic Renaissance keyboard finger-work (a “Tiento” is the Spanish equivalent of a toccata). Only later did we discover that the word is also the name of a style of flamenco dancing, which links nicely with Danzas (dances). The first movement is an extended fanfare, with military rhythms on the tenor drums and dramatic cornet and horn calls. Next comes a witty waltz featuring the horn. The music builds in complexity; the main horn theme returns before a playful coda. The following Andante makes effective use of the mutes, both in the haunting opening “pyramid” chords, and in the elaborate, recurrent cornet duets; the two cornets have the last word. After a couple of false starts, the finale sets off at a cracking pace, with dislocated accents creating an irregular rhythmic pulse. There are opportunities for every instrument to shine (metaphorically) and the music gets even faster for a thrilling conclusion.Duration: 10:30 minutesPercussion: 3 Players playing tenor drum, side drum, tambourine, suspended cymbal, triangle, 2 tom-toms and castanetsGrade 5: Difficult Championship and 1st Section Bands
