Trittico was commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association for their national championships in 1988.A trittico is a triptych or group of three paintings or musical compositions based on a common theme and presented or performed together. The present work is a set of three extended variations on the American shaped-note hymn Consolation.The work opens in grand style with motives based on intervals of the hymn tune. The opening motif, and smaller fragments of it reappear throughout the piece and serve as an underlying element alongside the theme itself.The first variation is essentially a scherzo which echoes the minor mood of the theme. The hemiolic opposition of compound and duple time is used to good effect and, again, the main motif is never far away. This is music with energy and forward movement.The second variation gives the soloists a chance to shine. The mood is tranquil, yet there is always some activity and the musical material pre-echoes the third variation.The third variation is another scherzo-like section, the main theme accompanied by a rhythmic ostinato. Toward the conclusion there is a short aleatoric passage - a variation within a variation allowing half the band to make their own variations in a cacophony of sound. Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are "concertante" in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. Partita dates from 1971, when it was commissioned by the Redbridge Youth Band. The musical thread that runs through the work is the 13th century plainsong Dies Irae from the Requiem Mass. This gives the work a rather sombre tone which is audible right from the start of its first movement Intrada. The initial hammer-like chords of the opening and conclusion are only interrupted momentarily by a more lyrical modal tune. Even here, on its repetition, it is surrounded by more insistent textural patterns.The second movement, Chorale and Variations, uses the Dies Irae as the basis for an extended melody in the manner of a baroque sarabande. The five variations that follow are varied in texture, tempi, and dynamics. The final March is more optimistic in mood and presents as its main idea a rather jaunty theme which gets developed throughout the movement. However, the ominous presence of the Dies Irae has the last say with a final statement to round off the work.Duration: 11.00

Eriskay Love Lilt is a traditional Gaelic melody from the Western Isles of Scotland, sensitively arranged here by Andrew Duncan as a cornet solo with brass band accompaniment.This arrangement was written in 2001 for Phillip McCann and was first played by him with the Hepworth Band at the 2002 Leek Music Festival in Derbyshire, England. It has also since been recorded by Eleanor Ferguson with the Whitburn Band on Reflections of Freedom.Andrew Duncan comments: The Isle of Eriskay (Eirisgeigh) lies forty miles off the North West coast of Scotland in the North Atlantic. It is a small island, only two kilometres square and lies between the larger islands of South Uist and Barra. Eriskay is one of the islands which form the archipelago known as the Western Isles or Na h-Eileanan an Air. The Eriskay Love Lilt is a hauntingly beautiful tune which is typical of the greater number of traditional Gaelic melodies in that it is largely based on the Aeolian mode, the black notes on the piano.Also available with piano accompanimentor as a solo with brass ensemble (10-piece).

£119.95Harrison's Dream (Brass Band - Score and Parts)
At 8.00pm on the 22nd of October 1707, the Association, flagship of the Royal Navy, struck rocks off the Scilly Isles with the loss of the entire crew. Throughout the rest of the evening the remaining three ships in the fleet suffered the same fate. Only 26 of the original 1,647 crew members survived. This disaster was a direct result of an inability to calculate longitude, the most pressing scientific problem of the time. It pushed the longitude question to the forefront of the national consciousness and precipitated the Longitude Act. Parliament funded a prize of �20,000 to anyone whose method or device would solve the dilemma. For carpenter and self-taught clockmaker John Harrison, this was the beginning of a 40 year obsession. To calculate longitude it is necessary to know the time aboard ship and at the home port or place of known longitude, at precisely the same moment. Harrison's dream was to build a clock so accurate that this calculation could be made, an audacious feat of engineering. This work reflects on aspects of this epic tale, brilliantly brought to life in Dava Sobel's book Longitude. Much of the music is mechanistic in tone and is constructed along precise mathematical and metrical lines. The heart of the work however is human - the attraction of the �20,000 prize is often cited as Harrison's motivation. However, the realisation that countless lives depended on a solution was one which haunted Harrison.
