This descriptive work for brass band by Joe Galuszka depicts the horrors of war. War is all around us. Every day, another life is lost. Myanmar, Sudan, Ethiopia, Ukraine, Colombia, Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. As time goes on, more and more countries are brought to the end of what is a diplomatic struggle - in where war seems to be the only option. 'War! Terror! Panic! captures the tumultuous and relentless nature of war. With driving rhythms, aggressive brass fanfares, and thundering percussion, the listener is immersed in the chaos of battle. Dissonance and clashing harmonies depict the discord that pervades war and takes us on a journey through the terror and panic that comes with the brutality of conflict. Remembrance (For Those That We Have Lost) provides a poignant and reflective interlude, allowing the audience to contemplate the human cost of war. Mournful melodies and expressive solos for trombone, euphonium and glockenspiel, convey the depth of sorrow and loss, serving as a powerful reminder of the toll war takes on individuals and communities. The final movement, Hymn for Peace and Hope is a testament to the enduring human spirit and the yearning for harmony - dissonance and conflict gradually give way to consonance and resolution. We celebrate the human capacity for unity and the triumph of peace over strife, as we imagine a world at piece. Love Eternal was arranged by Gavin Lamplough for trombone virtuoso Isobel Daws to perform in a special concert with the Melbourne Staff Band to honour its Bandmaster Ken Waterworth, on the occasion of his retirement after 30 years of leading the band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the trombone to be enjoyed by the listener. This piece was arranged by Halyna Ovcharenko, a Ukrainian composer who was born in Lugansk, a Ukrainian city that is currently under occupation by the Russian Federation. All the proceeds from this sale will go towards the 'A family for every orphan' appeal, which is providing emergency relief services to thousands of children and families in Ukraine. For more information about the charity please visit https://afamilyforeveryorphan.org/ukraine/ Halyna Ovcharenko has been composing music since she was 11. Many of her compositions of various genres have received international awards, but she discovered the world of brass band music with its specific timbre and huge range of musical colors only recently, in 2022, while composing her Vyshyvanka for Grimethorpe Colliery Band. Halyna comments: "I enjoyed my experience. Since then I have had an appetite to write more for brass bands, and here we are - an arrangement of a traditional English Christmas song which I have done especially to raise money for Ukrainian orphans. Their heroic parents stood for my Lugansk, for our Ukraine and for the whole World. I hope that the World will make these children feel that they are not left alone, giving them love, care and joy." £33.59A Century of Art (Brass Band) Robbert Vos
A Century of Art was composed for Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht from the town of De Goorn (The Netherlands) for its 100th anniversary in 2022. A version for Fanfare Orchestra was commissioned by the Fanfare Project Orchestra in 2023. The title of the work refers to Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht's 100-year existence and the array of art that has been created in that time. A Century of is a flashy and virtuosic opening work where melodic lines are combined with other surprising compositional elements. You can hear, among some references to some famous brass band test pieces, a quote from Lohengrin by Richard Strauss. A transcription of Lohengrin was used at the 1922 British Open in England, one of the most famous brass band competitions in the world, the same year as Brass Band Kunst naar Kracht was founded. With the heart is a fanfare full of energy and celebration. The title references a quote from the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery: "it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye". This aesthetic links the passion of music to the giving ethos of the Rotary organisation, whose District 9800 commissioned the work for their 2024 District Conference. With the Heart was premiered by the Victorian Youth State Brass Band directed by Phillipa Edwards in Bendigo in April 2024. £29.86March from 'The Love for Three Oranges (Brass Band) Prokofiev arr. Wilkinson
This thrilling brass band arrangement of the March from 'The Love for Three Oranges' by Prokofiev has been skillfully arranged by Keith M. Wilkinson. This setting captures the essence of the original orchestral work, while showcasing the power and brilliance of the brass band. In 1918, Sergei Prokofiev undertook his first visit to the United States. A number of concerts of his works were held in Chicago, which were received very favourably. As a result, the director of the Chicago Opera Association, Cleofonte Campanini, commissioned Prokofiev to write an opera. It just so happened that, during his trip, he had written a draft of a libretto, based on the Italian play by Gozzi, L'amore delle tre melarance, adding some additional surrealism to the text. Given Prokofiev's poor English, and Americans unlikely to accept an opera in Russian, French was his final choice. The result, L'amour des trois oranges (or The Love for Three Oranges), which premiered at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921, conducted by Prokofiev himself. The March from this opera is probably the most familiar part and has been used by CBS in the radio-drama series The FBI in Peace and War. It was also used in films such as The Brink's Job and Prokofiev quoted it in the second act of his ballet Cinderella. £67.19Letters from Flanders (Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
This descriptive work by Australian composer Andrew Batterham portrays the experiences of his maternal grandfather, Corporal Reginald Littlejohns, (4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion) in the First World War. Reginald left Melbourne for Europe in May 1916 then served in Flanders through to the end of the war. He returned in April 1919, having sent hundreds of letters home during his service. His honest, articulate, and highly descriptive prose served as inspiration for this piece. Each of the 5 movements portrays a different aspect of Reginald's war, with a quote from his letters included. The first movement was premiered by the Box Hill City Band, conducted by Matt van Emmerik, in Melbourne. Daniel van Bergen conducted Booroondara Brass performing most of the work in April 2019, and Box Hill premiered the complete version in November 2019 conducted by Simon Brown.
