£59.00Caprice (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
VIEW SCORE PDF Caprice was written for Matthew van Emmerik, to showcase his virtuosity in an engaging piece of concert music. The work is in theme and variation form, with the primary material being the theme from the last of Paganini's Ventiquattro Capricci per violino solo, a collection of 24 caprices for solo violin. This theme has been the inspiration for similar works by many composers since it was first published, including Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninov, Benny Goodman and Andrew Lloyd Webber. In this work, the famous theme is treated to a more contemporary approach. The first variation, Capricious, relies on motor rhythms and jagged dialogues between the soloist and the band. It is couched in an organic scale reminiscent of the Phrygian mode. The second variation, Sad, is in direct contrast, acting as a traditional ballad and allowing the soloist to explore the expressive side of the instrument. The third variation, Energetic, is a micro set of variations in itself, designed to display the soloist's innovative technique and stamina. Each section is more challenging than the last, until the work concludes with a whirlwind dance at breakneck speed. Like all of Batterham's recent work, the musical language of Caprice draws upon classical, jazz, funk and ska elements to create a unique sound where anything can happen, and probably will. Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D is a cornerstone of the Baroque period, a work widely known and frequently heard at concerts and events globally. This brass band arrangement by Steven Ponsford offers a new perspective on this classical piece. The arrangement begins with the familiar ground bass theme, followed by a series of four-bar motifs. Ponsford has developed these motifs, distributing them across the band to give interest to every section of the band. A short fugue is included in the middle of the piece, referencing a style Pachelbel contributed to. The majority of the music is accompanied by a rock beat, aiming to create a fresh and lighthearted interpretation of the original work. This will be an ideal item for both concert and entertainment contest programmes. £33.18Prelude in C-sharp Minor (Brass Band) Rachmaninoff arr. Rob Bushnell
One of Sergei Rachmaninoff's most famous compositions, Prelude in C-sharp minor (Op. 3, No. 2) is part of a set of five pieces entitled Morceaux de fantaisie. It was written when Rachmaninoff was only 19 years old and was first performance by the composer on 26 September 1892 at a festival called the Moscow Electrical Exhibition. This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been transposed from the original (for piano) of C-sharp minor to A minor, which better suits a brass band. There is another arrangement of this piece by Sandy Smith (published by Obrasso) which is designed for more advanced ensembles. Franz Joseph Haydn's Horn Concerto No.1 in D major was composed in 1762, when he was new to the Esterhazy court. It is a virtuosic concerto that showcases the beauty and range of the horn. The concerto was originally scored for solo horn and orchestra, and is one of Haydn's most popular works. Here it has been arranged by Duncan Wilson for tenor horn with brass band. His arrangement of the concerto is a faithful and effective adaptation of the original work. The movement opens with a lively tutti introduction, followed by the entrance of the solo horn. The horn plays a series of melodies and passages that are both lyrical and virtuosic. The band provides accompaniment and contrast, and the two interact in a lively dialogue. The movement builds to a climax and then concludes with a triumphant coda. VIEW SCORE PDF Cornish Fantasy was written for Kidlington Concert Brass's euphonium soloist Benjamin Abbott to perform in their Autumn 2021 series of concerts and contests. Based around a series of Cornish folk tunes, it pays tribute to Ben's Cornish roots, and in particular to his banding education with the Camborne Town Band. The solo opens with the 'unofficial Cornish anthem' Trelawny, which is followed with a series of virtuoso cadenzas. After these is an up-tempo jig in several segments, containing the traditional tunes Camborne Hill, Pendeen Jig, Newlyn Jig, Pencarrow, and Off She Goes, the latter two at a breakneck pace that carries through to a triumphant close. All Your Anxiety is a reflective and expressive work for brass band inspired by Edward Joy's sacred song of the same name. Drawing deeply from the hymn's text and message, the piece explores the tension between human unease and the promise of peace found in faith. The work opens with a distinctive eighth-note figure in the euphonium that immediately establishes an unsettled character. Wide intervallic leaps and atypical slur groupings evoke a sense of fragility and uncertainty, musically portraying the weight of sorrow and care described in the opening verse of the hymn. This motivic material becomes the foundation of the entire arrangement, reappearing in varied forms as counter-melody, accompaniment, and featured solo lines across the ensemble. As the piece unfolds, the music gradually broadens and warms, reflecting the invitation of the text to "come to the cross" and leave one's burdens behind. Moments of lyricism and calm contrast with the earlier unease, leading toward a more settled and hopeful conclusion that mirrors the refrain's assurance: "Never a burden He cannot bear, never a friend like Jesus." Love Eternal was written by Gavin Lamplough for Neil Blessett, who at the time of writing was the Principal Horn player of both Birmingham (UK) Citadel Band and the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army. After popular demand, it was set as a cornet or flugel horn solo, both with piano accompaniment and this version with brass band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the tenor horn to be enjoyed by the listener. The music reflects the Christian musician's desire to offer their talents to God to be used by Him, and the lyrics of the song are ones of contrast as the musical journey of this piece seeks to emulate the juxtaposition through contrasting moods. This light-hearted soprano cornet feature offers a fresh and entertaining take on the well-known Christmas carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Thought to date back to 16th-century England, the carol reflects a tradition of festive singing outside the homes of the well-to-do - often accompanied by requests for treats such as figgy pudding, a forerunner of today's Christmas pudding. Kenneth Downie's arrangement embraces the jovial spirit of the original, pairing nimble soprano cornet writing with bright, colourful scoring for brass band. The famous refrain, 'And we won't go until we've got some', sets the tone: cheerful, a touch cheeky, and full of seasonal good humour. This piece was written as a full length virtuosic solo based on an earlier work called Humble Hero, which is also available from BrookWright Music. It is an extension of that work and still dedicated to Ken Bradley, designed to provide a reflection of his technical skills and a platform to emulate musicianship for which he was renowned. Ken Bradley (1962 - 2022) was one of Australia's best-known, well-loved, and talented brass musicians. The solo is also available from this website with piano accompaniment.
