For this brooding piece the composer has used the following storyline. "A sad elderly man sits alone in a bar whilst an accordionist plays a slowtango. A beautiful woman walks in wearing a single black pearl necklace and proceeds to dance with the old man. Gradually the music becomesmore and more spirited and the dance faster as the old man becomes youthful again. With a passionate kiss he passes out in thegirl's arms and when he awakens he is back in the bar alone save for the accordionist. As he contemplates his dream he notices a single black pearlleft behind on the bar. The sombre mood is lightened in the middle section by a deliberately trite and stylised trumpet duet, but we soon returnto the opening material for a slow fade-out"

£48.99Angel Voices (Rhapsody for Soprano Cornet & Band) Brian Bowen
This solo for soprano cornet and brass band was written by the late Brian Bowen for the New York Staff Band in 1989 when Gordon Ward was its very fine soprano cornetist. The title comes from a song by Ernest Rance (music) and Reginald Woods (lyrics) published by The Salvation Army in 1955. In this rhapsody Rance's melody is first alluded to by the horns at the pick-up to bars 19-21, then more fully with the soloist's entry to bar 51 (but in minor mode until bar 55). Much of the original music is ethereal in nature, maybe reflecting the angelic hosts. Published by BrookWright Music in 2023, the score now carries the inscription 'To the memory of Linda Ward' - Gordon Ward's wife who very sadly died in November 2021. Firefly (brass band score & parts) - Simon Dobson
Firefly was composed by award-winning composer Simon Dobson (b.1981) to provide an entertaining up-tempo concert work for community and youth bands. Composed in funk-rock style, and is based on the groove beat with which it opens. Dobson says, "Firefly was written as a break from my more serious music and as a 'hat tip' to the various types of beat orientated music I listen to." It was first performed by Oslofjord Brass in Norway and in its wind version by Harmonie Shostakovich, Switzerland. Duration: 5-6 minutes. INSTRUMENTATION: 1 Eflat Sop. COMPOSER: Chris Cobon1 - Stone breakersThe Suite opens with the only picture, of the five, which is not in the pointillist style. Several pictures were produced on the Stone Breaker theme, painted in oil on small panels called croquetons. The subjects in the art are breaking stones for use in road building. Musically the piece starts canonically alluding to the repetitive nature of the labour. A more direct, rhythmic link of three hammer blows, are first heard in the opening passages in the percussion. These hammer blows are also built into each third bar of the cannon and, therefore, become embedded into the opening section. Arising from the flurry of activity are two, three bar legato phrases in a majestic style until it falls to a more dramatic sounding of the legato phrase over a resounding of the cannon in a new textural order. This leads to a short, new section, featuring a trombone trio underneath rising scales in the cornet section.2: Bathers at AsnieresBathers at Asnieres was Seurat's first major painting...The canvas is of a suburban, Parisian riverside scene. Isolated figures, with their clothes, piled sculpturally on the riverbank, together with trees, austere boundary walls and buildings, and the River Seine are presented in a formal layout. This moment aims to capture the tranquillity of a summer's day in the park. This painting led the development of the pointillist technique whereby the colours were applied as small dots that combine to form a picture when viewed at a distance. The trombones capture this idea in the opening bars with their carillon-style entries. The 2nd/3rd cornets make a more direct link by individual picking out single notes of a melody being sounded on Baritones and trombones at C. The use of mutes adds a subtle darker side to this movement which nods to the industrial working-class aspects of the painting.3: White DogWhite Dog features a few characters relaxing in the sun, and a white dog with its tail held high. Having two dogs myself, I've taken the idea of an excited dog with a waggy tail as the basis for this short, middle, movement.4: Sunday Afternoonon the Island of La Grande Jatte Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is arguably Seurat's most famous work.5: Parade de CirqueCircus Sideshow Parade de Cirque encompasses a circus scene's boisterousness, vitality and chaos. However, the painting, constructed with the new pointillist technique, also portrays stillness, calmness and precision. Alexander Borodin's Second Symphony in B minor dates from the years 1869-76, a time when he was also working on his enduring opera Prince Igor. Flavors of the exotic and outdoor celebration seemed to have spilled over from the opera in this brilliant sonata movement. Borodin seldom quotes Russian folk tunes, but his graceful melodic lines are permeated with the spirit of his native song, supported by iridescent harmonies and bright colors. This arrangement for brass band was premiered by The Salvation Army's New York Staff Band, with Ronald Waiksnoris conducting, at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on 11 April 2001. This complete transcription of the Finale movement of Borodin's Second Symphony has an approximate duration of 6.40 minutes. To alternatively utilize the piece as an opener, a cut from bar 173 to 272 is indicated with Coda signs, reducing the piece to 4.30 seconds. Marc Jeanbourquin composed 'Spiral' during a music camp, for himself and 9 other fellow musicians. Due to the success of this piece, some years later, he has taken the main theme and developed it, with a kind of tribute to Camille Saint-Saens, one of his favourite composers. The constant changes between the minor and major keys, and between the often changing 2 and 3 feeling, with the occasional 2/4 bar thrown in, do not disrupt the flow of the piece in the slightest; in fact it is what has inspired the title. A percussion interlude, which is broken up by the unregularly occurring meter, brings the piece to a restatement of the original theme, which then ends in a large crescendo. Spiral is perfectly suited to either the opening or the close of any concert.

Gipsies are wizards with the fiddle. Eastern European folk musicians and gipsies are using a lot of brass in their music. Their brass ensembles are very impressive, so the link to brassbands is quickly made. Based on the folk theme of Manea Tsigailor all cornets join the theme in an up tempo 7/8 bar. Gathered around a campfire gipsies are telling stories and making music. When the lower brass is telling their story all others clap hands. All of a sudden a cornet soloist appears. When we return to the basic theme the story ends with some dazzling bars.

Description...and the winter moon riseswas inspired by a winter's evening car journey across the Pennines from Manchester to Huddersfield, through the brass band heartland of Saddleworth. There was recent snow on the ground, and the sun had just set. A bright clear moon was rising into a sky coloured with orange from the setting sun, and the moonlight made all the snow and ice sparkle.The work is the fourth movement of a larger 5 movement suite entitled "North!", but can be (and has been) performed in isolation. This work was a finalist in the 2012 Ohio Brass Arts Festival composition competition.Performance NotesThe percussion parts should be playable by three players; the "arco" parts of the vibraphone parts should be played by drawing a cello or double bass bow up the side of the bar. Motors should be left off throughout.Three of the brass players are asked to double on triangles for the first part of the piece; ideally these should be of different sizes giving clearly different sounds. The easiest solution is to tie a triangle to the music stand, rather than try to hold it and then swap instruments later in the piece.Click below to watch a playback preview of the score!

Gull - forbannelsen (Gold - The Curse) 2:50Total durata 13:30This work is based on five scenes from the tale about "Sigurd Favnesbane" (Sigurd the dragonslayer). Moods and atmospheres in the piece represent my way of retelling the old myth.1. The SwordThe dwarf blacksmith Regin is hammering and sharpening the edges of the magical sword Gram. After three attempts the sword is finally sharp enough to kill a dragon. 2. Warning - from a Wise manRichard Wagners opera Sigfried is based on the same story. In the opera the hero get warned by a wise man. He tells the secret of how to survive an attack of the dragon by hiding in a hole in the pathway and then kill the dragon with the sword as the dragon passes on its way to the river to drink water.3. DragonThe Dragon (Favne) guards a fantastic treasure, but he is also the brother of the blacksmith Regin. Favne get killed and his blood flows slowly while he laments (trombone/bass trombone).4. Warning II - from singing birdsWhile frying the heart, Sigurd burns his thumb and put it into his mouth to cool it down. Then he swallow a drop of fresh magic dragon blood which transfers the ability to understand the birdlanguage. The birds sing warnings to Sigurd telling him that Regin will betray him and later kill him. Sigurd then kills Regin instead.5. Gold - the CurseSigurd takes the gold treasure and escapes on the horseback of Grane. But his robbery of the gold lead him into trouble: The gold is banned and a curse will hit everyone whotakes it...Myth is a programmatic work where the story is quite clearly illustrated throughout the piece:In the first movement you can hear the blacksmith working with hammer on ambolt while the heat is intense from the glows. The dwarf has got his own theme i lower brass (bar 4-5). The hero Sigurd has his own identifying chord (2 bars before F). The chord is also a symbol of the sword.In the second movement the warning from the wise man is expressed in the lyric bass line.The airblow in instruments illustrate the dragon Favne on his way out of his cave, and later the blood flows slowly. The dragon takes his last deep breath after a painful duet in trombones. The birds sing their motifs (lightly, but not cheerful though), until Sigurd cuts the head off Regin and it hits the ground.The last movement describes the atmosphere andstate of mind as the curse infects the obsessed thief.

"Blackbird Special" is a song by American band Dirty Dozen Brass Band.The song is an entertainment piece, a good concert opener or encore.When used as a concert opener one may let the different sections of the band enter the stage one by one playing in order of appearance.Percussion section may play their parts ad lib. The most important is the groove of the piece.Please pay attention to strict articulation from bar 17. Be aware of the marcatos at 33. The last note of the slurs at 41 must be not be too short.It's important to hold the note values, especially in bars 49, 51, 53 and 55.From 57 and throughout the piece, the percussion may invite the audience to join for handclaps.As an extra effect, the Bass Tubas may stand at 57, the Horns at 59, backrow Cornets and Trombones at 61 and Euphonium/Baritone/Solo Cornets at 63.
