Jonny Makes Waves (Bra) - Max Stannard
Jonny Makes Waves is an exciting cornet solo with jazzy influences which is based around traditional sea songs. The main melody, A Life on the Ocean Wave, is the regimental march of the Royal Marines, while Heart of Oak , the official march of the Royal Navy, is quoted in the middle of the piece. These two melodies are given new harmonies and extensive quasi improvised sections by the soloists, in addition to call and response sections allowing all the band to join in. This fun filled piece is guaranteed to get your feet tapping.

Enjoy your Weekend! is a fun and varied composition that offers lots of playing pleasure for both youth and smaller bands. The composition is based on a simple and pretty theme. The first part, Lazy Sunday, is built around a relaxed swinging tune. The second part, Close Friends, is more melodic and serious in nature. Gipsies are wizards with the fiddle. Eastern European folk musicians and gipsies are using a lot of brass in their music. Their brass ensembles are very impressive, so the link to brassbands is quickly made. Based on the folk theme of Manea Tsigailor all cornets join the theme in an up tempo 7/8 bar. Gathered around a campfire gipsies are telling stories and making music. When the lower brass is telling their story all others clap hands. All of a sudden a cornet soloist appears. When we return to the basic theme the story ends with some dazzling bars.

DescriptionMonteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin) is a musical setting by Claudio Monteverdi of the evening vespers on Marian feasts, scored for soloists, choirs, and orchestra. It is an ambitious work in scope, style and scoring, and has a duration of around 90 minutes. Published in Venice with a dedication to Pope Paul V dated 1 September 1610 as Sanctissimae Virgini Missa senis vocibus ac Vesperae pluribus decantandae, cum nonnullis sacris concentibus, ad Sacella sive Principum Cubicula accommodata ("Mass for the Most Holy Virgin for six voices, and Vespers for several voices with some sacred songs, suitable for chapels and ducal chambers"), it is mercifully regularly shortened to Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610.Monteverdi was born and spent the first part of his working life in Cremona before moving to Mantua (where he composed the Vespers) and finally attaining one of the top jobs in Italian renaissance music as Maestro di Capella at the Basilica di San Marco in Venice. Stephen Bulla is a former member of Monclair Citadel Band and gladly supplied Bandmaster Charles Baker with this fine march for a recording made by the band in 2001. The tune 'Onward Christian Soldiers' forms the bulk of the trio, first being tossed around in various registers and then, just the chorus, in the festive ending.

Chorale for Peace is a song of hope and peace for humanity. In commissioning this work, the wind band of Le Portel (France) wanted to pay tribute to the victims of 8 September 1943, when around 100 Allied planes dropped more than 5,000 bombs on the town of Boulogne and the surrounding area. In fact, this operation was nothing more than a diversion to make the enemy believe that a landing was imminent in the north of France. This music is slow, an adagio commemorating the human sacrifice of this operation. But more broadly, the composer also wanted to express his support for the peoples who, even today, suffer oppression. This set includes an optional choir part that offers the possibility of making an even deeper impression on the listener.

Black Gold was commissioned by Musikverein 1891 "Harmonie" Saarwellingen e.V. (Germany) to mark its 130th anniversary. This composition pictures the history of the mining industry in the town of Saarwellingen and its surrounding region, where the life of the miners as well as their families revolved around coal, or black gold, for centuries on end. The piece is based on motifs from the famous song "Gluck auf, Gluck auf, der Steiger kommt..." ("Good luck, good luck, the mining foreman comes"), a veritable anthem for miners the world over.

Chanson de Matin ("Morning Song") (Op. 15, No. 2) was likely written by Edward Elgar around 1889, originally for violin and piano. He later created an orchestral version. The premiere of this version in 1901 was conducted by none other than Henry Wood. Wood conducted the Promenade Concerts in London for almost 50 years and is considered the "father" of The Proms.The English composer Edward Elgar is perhaps best known for his Enigma Variations and Pomp and Circumstance marches.This arrangement was written during the COVID-19 pandemic for Askoy Brass Band's album "Gjensyn", available on Spotify and other streaming services.
