Can - Can - Jacques Offenbach - Gavin Somerset

The gallop from Offenbach's overture to "Orpheus In The Underworld" is one of the most famous finales to any classical piece of music. Used countless times from pop music to Moulin Rouge dancers, the piece has become a favourite encore/finale item. Now arranged by Gavin Somerset to be playable by lower section bands, and with some extra parts to really liven the item up, this piece is sure to leave your audience wanting more. A perfect finisher for any concert.

Good Christian Men Rejoice - Traditional - David Holling

Good Christian Men, Rejoice (or In Dulce Jubilo) was of course made famous by Mike Oldfield back in 1975 and is possibly one of the most played Christmas tunes there is. In this arrangement David Holling treats us to a Rock/Jazz fusion style in the opening section before settling into a calm, lush cornet solo of the Sussex Carol with jazz-inspired harmonies and orchestrations. The final section brings back the original theme in a Lovatt-Cooper style big finish with all-guns-blazing to the end! This arrangement would suit all bands from Section 3 upwards (not excluding ambitious 4th section bands too!) and works perfectly as a good opener or finisher to a Christmas concert.

Postcard from Mexico - H. Snell

I wrote Postcard from Mexico for a BBC TV contest, because I urgently needed a finisher to provide an exciting and powerful end to the programme. PFM did the trick and to my surprise immediately became popular with bands and audiences. I evoked the atmosphere of Mexican music with nods towards Aaron Copland, Chavez and Ginastera. However the responsability for most of it, particularly the rhythmic difficulties and the unusual drunken middle section, must be laid at my door. We grade it 2 and 3 because, while difficult, so many bands love to tangle with its problems.

    Dreamtime - Dan Price

Brass Band Concert Series - Grade 5 A demanding but rewarding concert finale or first half finisher by Dan Price. Commissioned by Philip Harper for the Cory Bands 2013 tour to Australia, Dreamtime draws inspiration from Australian Aboriginal mythology. The Dreamtime is a sacred era in which the Aborigines believe ancestral totemic (symbolic) spirits created the world. The work is heavily percussive, includes a part for narrator and even includes a pseudo didgeridoo part created with the use of multi-phonics in the euphoniums and tubas however; a convincing performance of this work can still be achieved without the use of either the multi-phonics, narration and a carefully considered selection of the available percussion parts. Duration: 00:07:30 (with Narration)

    Starburst - Dan Price

Brass Band Concert Series - Grade 3 A fast-paced and exciting concert finale or first half finisher by Dan Price. Commissioned by the Greater Manchester Hub Youth Brass Band for their 2014 season, Starburst is a high-octane work in a contemporary style with elements of rock and funk fusion. The piece features soloistic input from all sections, with vibrant percussion colours adding to the overall effectiveness. Although the piece sounds extremely virtuosic it is accessible for most bands, and is fun to rehearse as well as exciting to listen to. Duration: c. 04:00
