    Canzona Bravura - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

I always enjoy writing solos, because it is a new opportunity to compose a piece of music for an instrument to demonstrate its full musical capability. In ‘Canzona Bravura’ I was asked to compose something new and fresh for the euphonium that portrayed its technical ability and also the sonorous sound this fabulous instrument has to offer. The piece is in ternary form with sections A/B/A (fast/slow/fast). I wanted to write music that sounded fun to play and also music that the audience would enjoy listening to. I also wanted to give the music a more modern feel and so the relentless quaver pulse from the ensemble provides a continuous heartbeat for the soloist to sit on and show off its technical capability. The euphonium shows off its technical ability through the slurred quavers and running semiquavers. However, the lyrical playing which is prevalent throughout the slow B section gets an introduction during the fast A section at bar 38. It gives the listener a taste of the slow melody that is to come and also an opportunity to join the euphonium with its unfashionable cousin the baritone as they play a duet together.‘Canzona Bravura’ definitely offers plenty for the soloist to get their teeth into and also allows them the opportunity to enjoy their lyrical playing to the full. There is a lot of musical material which is passed between soloist and accompanying ensemble which forges a strong musical link within the music. It provides an excellent opportunity for the music to connect with soloist, ensemble and audience.Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Suite from Gloria - Karl Jenkins

"The Latin text of the Gloria is an ancient hymn of praise from the Christian tradition derived from the song of the angels who announce the birth of Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel according to St Luke. The Gloria has formed part of the Ordinary of the Mass for many centuries, and in that context has been set by many composers; there are also independent settings by Handel, Vivaldi and Poulenc. But the opportunity to work with such an iconic text also afforded me an opportunity to explore how other religions perceive the Divine. This is an ongoing feature of my work, from the multi-faceted The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, the Japanese haiku in my Requiem to the ancient Arabic text in my Stabat Mater.” Karl Jenkins, June 2010Originally scored for choir, orchestra and ethnic percussion, Karl Jenkins’ Gloria received its world premiere on November 7th 2010 at the Royal Albert Hall, and was recorded in the same year by the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Karl Jenkins. This version for brass band and percussion was arranged and edited by Andrew Wainwright and Robert Childs, and received its premiere on November 16th 2014 at The Sage Gateshead performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band conducted by Robert Childs. The work is in five movements: I. The Proclamation: Gloria in Excelsis DeoThe Proclamation begins with a rousing fanfare featuring antiphonal cornet choirs, before unison plainchant introduces melodic lines for solo cornet flugel horn and tutti band. The movement closes with a return to the fanfare style. II. Prayer: Laudamus tePrayer is typical of Karl Jenkins; serenely beautiful and lyrical in style. This movement features various soloists and works well in isolation. III. The Psalm: Tehellim - Psalm 150The Psalm is vibrant and high paced featuring ethnic style percussion. Virtuosic in nature the movement also makes use of the antiphonal cornet choirs.IV. The Song: I’ll Make MusicThe Song represents the ‘Golden Section’ of the suite and is presented here as a cornet solo. Like Prayer, this heavenly music is also effective as a stand alone concert item.V. The Exaltation: Domine Deus The Exaltation follows the same form as The Proclamation. With a lyrical middle section featuring solo horn, flugel and solo cornet, the start and finish make use once again of brilliant antiphonal cornet choirs.Suite from Gloria can be heard on 'Grimethorpe Entertain' CD available to buy here.

    Echoes - Andrew Stevenson

Echoes is an original light concert item based on the style of an Irish Air. The core of the piece is a melody which is first heard in the euphonium and then moves onto cornet and then later becomes a tutti passage. As well as this melody, there are also moments in the piece where some motifs are heard in counterpoint; this is where the title Echoes comes from. These counterpoint ideas symbolise the motivic sounds bouncing around a chasm and echoing back. The music gives lots of chances for bands to show off their sound as well as the principle players in their solos. There is also a wide scope of opportunities for conductors to insert their own musicality into the music to bring out emotion and drama. Echoes is a very simple and effective piece, it is also extremely catchy and easy to listen to.
