This arrangement of O Little Town of Bethlehem is based on the beloved carol text by Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), set to the familiar St. Louis tune composed by Lewis Redner in 1868. Originally written for a Christmas Sunday school service, the melody famously came to Redner in a dream the night before it was needed - an origin story that mirrors the spontaneous inspiration behind this brass band setting. Fendall Hill's arrangement was prepared for Sovereign Brass (Wednesbury, England) and included in their 2023 Christmas CD. Lyrical and reverent, this version captures the timeless beauty of the carol while offering a fresh voice for modern brass ensembles. This popular Christmas carol tells the story of a Bohemian King who braved harsh winter weather to give alms to a poor peasant. This takes place on the Feast of Stephen, the first day of Christmas (December 26th). This legend is based on the life of the historical Saint Wenceslas 1, Duke of Bohemia (907 - 935). In 1853 the English hymn writer John Mason Neale wrote his own version of this tale, setting his words to the melody of a 13th century spring carol "Tempus adest floridum" which had first been published in Piae Cantiones (1582). It is this version that has endured to become the popular carol of today. Duration: 4.30

This is an fabulous little Christmas cornet solo, that will mad an excellent addition to any programme. It starts very simply with the soloist and a quartet of horns, baritone and euphonium. It then builds for a fast verse and then modulates into the minor, with the horns taking the "Who is He" melody and the cornet moving to a minor version of "Silent Night". The piece then shifts back to the tonic key with the cornet finishing the final verse while the whole band then slowly re-enters.
