The Star and a Rose is a big-scale Christmas piece for band, featuring four seasonal chorales.The first is a Gregorian-like chant Hodie Christus natus est.In this section of the piece, a soloist can be placed away from the band, maybe on a gallery. The soloist can be a tenor instrument, maybe trombone, or you can feature a vocal soloist.After this, the music leads us on to the old German Christmas chorale Lo, how a rose e'er blooming. This song is given a fairly rhythmical treatment, but make sure that the melody is presented in a cantabile style. An interlude follows, before the piece presents one of the most used and loved Scandinavian Christmas chorales, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My Heart will always wander), composed by the Danish bishop Hans Adolph Brorson around 1732. This song is building towards a climax, before the solo horn brings it all down to the Stable view described in the lyrics. Then comes a transition that brings us in to the final section of the piece, which presents the international Christmas Carol Adeste Fideles. As many will notice, I have borrowed a section from David Wilcocks majestic harmonization towards the end. The title of the piece has its background form the lyrics in My heart will always wander, where the text speaks about the stars in the sky. But also in the latin text for Adeste Fideles: Stella duce, Magi, Christum adorantes The Rose is of course from the lyrics in the chorale Lo, how a Rose.

DescriptionEs ist ein Ros Entsprungen is sometimes sung to the English words "A Great and Mighty Wonder". This tune to the reformation era German carol first appeared in the Speyer Hymnal in Cologne in 1599. This harmonisation of the tune by Michael Praetorius in 1609, one of his earliest publications. Praetorius was, along with his slightly younger contemporary Heinrich Schutz, the foremost German composer of the day, and became famous for his choral music. Much of this was written for multiple groups positioned around the church and conducted by a central conductor, giving a multi-phonic effect similar to the Venetian music of Gabrieli. With Sweet Jubilation - James Curnow
Explore different settings of the Medieval Latin carol "In Dulci Jubilo" via this solid arrangement by James Curnow. Opening with an exquisite "Brass Choir" section a la Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) and progressing through a "Woodwind Choir" section in the later J.S.Bach style, WITH SWEET JUBILATION is wonderful "style study" material. DURATION: 3'00". DIFFICULTY: 3rd+. Composed for Strata Brass in 2020 as part of their COVID-19 induced, virtually recorded 'A Christmas Carol' (a new suite for brass band lasting around 30 minutes in total), 'Bah Humbug!' is a tongue-in-cheek yet showy solo composed for Bass Trombone. Throughout the work, the solo line is used to depict Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man with little-to-no compassion or generosity and this grumpiness is portrayed throughout the solo. Often there will be moments of lightness and hoy, quickly banished by the misery of the Bass Trombonist!.

The words and lyrics of the Christmas Carol From Highest Heaven I Come To Tell were written by the great Martin Luther (1483-1546) and can be found in The Hymns of Martin Luther. Martin Luther expressed radical views which began the reformation movement. His followers protested at the treatment given to Martin Luther, the event from which the term 'Protestant' was derived. It was first published in Joseph Klug's Gesangsbuch in around 1535. Add a majestic Baroque feel to any concert with this simple yet effective arrangement.
