    Macbeth - Peter Meechan

    Commissioned by the Scottish Brass Band Association for the 2007 Scottish Open Championship, Macbeth takes itsa?? inspiration from the Shakespeare play of the same name. Character portraits (Of the three witches as well as Macbeth himself), abstractions (The lament), and scenes (Macbetha??s final battle with Macduff) make up the nine sections of the piece.i: WitchesThe prophecies of the three witches are an integral part of the play, and in this opening section, these mysterious characters are represented by three different sections of music that introduces the listener to the musical material of the piece.ii: DaggerMacbetha??s a??Is this a dagger I see before theea? speech, where an imaginary dagger leads him to contemplate the pending murder, builds in intensity before the bell tolls at itsa?? conclusion - a sign from Lady Macbeth that Duncan is now alone.iii: General MacbethA character portrait of Macbeth - a fearless General who has led his armies to defeat foes from all over Europe. His ambition and flair that make him such a great General are also the characteristics that lead to his eventual downfall.iv: Contemplations of Lady MacbethAlone and mad, Lady Macbeth ponders all that has gone, before taking her own life.v: LamentAlthough the play tells of Macbeth not feeling the pain of his wifea??s death, this lament ponders not only her death, but the tale as a whole.vi: Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrowIt is in this final soliloquy that we see the ultimate tragedy of Macbeth - the realisation that his life is ultimately worthless.vii: A spell still castThis acts as an prologue to section eight, restating the original a??witchesa? music, before heading into Macbetha??s final battle.viii: Final BattleMacbetha??s final battle, where he locks swords with Macduff.ix: Not of woman bornMacbetha??s realisation that the witches have misled him comes all too late, as Macduff beheads Macbeth, fulfilling the last prophecy.

    Paradise Lost - David Harrington

    A work alluding to the allure and multi-dimensional concept of a 'paradise' - the work aims to pit the solo horn against a backdrop of enveloping unknown beauty, exploring the primal, yet magnificent serenity of a garden bearing timeless prosperity.The horn solo explores this landscape - an intoxicating garden - with caution, nervously treading in a world of the exotic and the forbidden (Introduction). The character is shortly swamped in a lavish, walled paradise - a mirror image of misery and chaos, and freely enjoys the fruits and splendour of the garden (Scherzo). Eventually, the paradise shows its reversed side, and a poison seeps into the air. The joy and indulgence is cut short as the character bites from the tree of knowledge and is banished from the garden eternally.A soliloquy, slow movement, follows which allows the horn to reflect and question his decisions, and he laments over what paradise he really seeks (Romance).After a dramatic and romantic climax, the music descends back into a darker chaos - a more brutal version of the lively scherzo, this time in the form of an impending march. The character is suggested to be now lost in a hellish world as punishment for his greediness (Toccata).As the vibrant toccata refers back to the reflective material, the character then begins to understand where true paradise lies, and after reminiscing the romantic melodies from the centre of the work he rockets out of the fires of hell (Finale) and discovers true euphoria in a world outside the gates of hell and paradise.

    Essay - Edward Gregson

    This work was specially commissioned as the test piece for a new brass band competition in 1971, held at the Royal Albert Hall, London. It is in three movements, the titles of which all have literary connotations. The first movement, Dialoguetakes the form of 'conversations' between the instruments. The second movement, Soliloquy is dedicated to the memory of Gilbert Vinter - a composer who did so much in the 1960s to bring the brass band into the modern world. The final movement,Epigram, creates strong rhythmic contrasts and exploits the more virtuoso character of the brass band.

Like the 18th-Century Serenade form there are five movements, arranged symmetrically around a slow movement - Soliloquy - which separates movements entitled Burlesque (two) and Valse Caprice (three) respectively. The first and last movements share common material of a more symphonic stature, and the concerto ends with a brisk fugato. The solo horn is (in the band version) accompanied by a quintet of solo players (two cornets, euphonium, trombone, and tuba) who provide the lion's share of the counterpoint and contrast with the main body of musicians who provide musical punctuation in the more sonorous tutti sections. The first movement, Don Quixote's Dream, contains references to Cervantes' famous hero, the Spanish nature of his stories, and the ambling gait of his horseback adventures.
