    Match Day - Peter Meechan

Match Day takes its inspiration from a night in May 2005, when the team the composer supported from his childhood, Liverpool FC, won the European Cup in what was considered by many to be one of the greatest football matches of all time. The piece is not only inspired by a football match, but also takes its musical material from chants and songs that you will hear at 3PM on a Saturday afternoon at any football ground in the country.Match Day was written as a result of a commission from the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and their Musical Director, Bramwell Tovey, to whom the piece is dedicated.

    Sentinel - Peter Meechan

Sentinel was written in the summer of 2010 and follows on from another work by the composer, The Karman Line - a piece which describes the point where the earth's atmosphere ends and Outer Space begins.Sentinel goes further into space and takes the idea that the stars are somehow guardians of the sky that we can see, and Space further beyond. The opening section, which prominently features metallic percussion and broad melodies, portrays the grand open space that the stars inhabit. The middle, slower, section is more reflective depicting the isolation of Space, before we hear a reprise of the first section as the finale.Sentinel was written for the 2011 National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain.

    Wheal Breage - Terry Reed

The Cornish word Wheal strictly means "a place of work" but it is usually thought of as meaning a mine, because all Cornish mine names were prefixed by the word Wheal. The composer is the MD of Breage & District Silver Band and this march is dedicated to both his band, based in the village of Breage, Cornwall, and to the great Cornish mining heritage. Breage Parish had a number of successful tin and copper ore mines, some of which started in the 16th and 17th centuries and lasted until the end of the 19th century. Cornish Brass Bands and Male Voice Choirs were formed by the miners and have had a long association with the mining communities around Cornwall.Wheal Breage starts off in a jolly way to reflect the mining youth's carefree life outside of mining. At Section C, the march modulates to a minor key, reflecting the hard, industrious nature of mining; you can almost hear the Beam Engine Houses pumping the water out of the mines. At Section D, there is a dramatic time signature change from 6/8 to 4/4, followed in the Trio at Section E, by an original melody which was written to reflect and remember the men (and children) who tragically lost their lives in many mining accidents that occurred over a number of centuries. Section F is a joyful coda, reflecting the past Cornish Miners' Gala Parades which were headed by a Cornish Brass Band.

A Tear in the Fabric of Time - Gareth Wood

A Tear in the Fabric of Time is essentially a symphony for brass band and was inspired by the book The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, which attempts to simplify complex ideas in modern physics for the layperson. This piece was dedicated to and written for the Buy As You View Band but was first performed by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, conducted by Robert Childs in Summer 2006. The work is featured by the Cory Band on their recording The Promised Land (DOYCD218).A brassy, fanfare like introduction provides much of the material for the rest of the work. This leads into a dramatic 'Allegro' driving forward with brittle motives and stabbing chords. A euphonium melody accompanied by divided basses attempts to mellow the mood, but is unsuccessful as the music drives ruthlessly on! The centre of the work is a choral like Adagio; maybe the blackness of space or the darkness of human nature. A short episode leads into a 'Presto' which is a reworking of the first 'Allegro' relentlessly careering to a violent end! [Gareth Wood, 2006]

    Dream Catchers - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Dream Catchers is written in the style of a youth band test piece with lots of jazz and funk influences. The idea behind the piece is that every young musician has a chance of 'catching' their dreams by performing to as high a standard as they can. In the first and last sections of Dream Catchers, the performers are required to use their technical ability with lots of intricate playing, whereas in the dream-like middle section they play with beauty and style.Dream Catchers was composed for the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain and first performed by them in August 2007 at the Atrix Centre, Bromsgrove.

Ex Terra Lucem - Jonathan Bates

Ex Terra Lucem, translating 'From the Ground, Light' is the motto of the Merseyside town of St Helens, which pays homage to the rapid growth of the town during the industrial revolution. This motto was also a large influence on Danny Boyle's opening ceremony for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.Ex Terra Lucem is composed for, and dedicated to, Jay Hall and the St Helen's Youth Brass Band, following his appointment as musical director of the band in July 2016.Ex Terra Lucem is the second section set-test for the 2018 UK Regional Brass Band Championships.

    Skylines - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Skylines is composed in a funk style with a rigid bass line allowing various soloists to shine. It is composed in a style that many brass band traditionalists won't find stereotypical. That doesn't mean it won't challenge the youth bands who attempt to perform it though!Skylines will test all sections of the band and will provide a great opportunity for ensembles to develop their rhythmic playing, soloistic style and general ensemble skills. It is fresh and different and hopefully enjoyable for bands and audiences alike.
