The Spirit of Brass - Gavin Somerset

Commissioned for BrassFestUK 2017 & recorded by the Cory Band, the Spirit of Brass is an exciting, new energetic work that will fit perfectly into any concert, particularly as an opening item. With memorable themes, the composition takes its roots from that of John Williams’ various Olympic themes that he has composed over the years. As well as this ‘main version’, there is also a youth/training band version of the work available which is more accessible to younger bands. The two versions work as standalone items, or can be performed side-by-side. A great new original piece for Brass Band.

Perihelion: Closer to the Sun - Philip Sparke

Perihelion was commissioned by the Cory Band as their own-choice piece for the 2013 European Brass Band Championships, held in Oslo, Norway. Winning the set piece section of the contest and coming second to Eikanger-Bjorsvik Musikklag with their own choice selection, Cory went on to become European Champions for the fifth time.Cory MD Philip Harper had asked for a 'Concerto for Band' to fully exploit his outstanding band of virtuosi, and composer Philip Sparke created a one-movement work with contiguous sections, first featuring horns and flugel, then trombones followed by cornets and a slower central section for percussion and baritones, euphonium and basses. The piece is abstract in nature, without a specific programme, and the title merely reflects the fact that the piece was begun on January 2nd 2013, the day of Earth's perihelion - the point in its orbit when it is closest to the sun. It could also be argued that the piece weaves between moments of brilliant optimism and dark shadow, both of which can be the result of bright sunshine.

    Brass Triumphant - Gareth Wood

Brass Triumphant is a four-movement work and was composed for the Cory Band during their 125th anniversary year of 2009.The first movement is a celebratory fanfare featuring a strong melody as the thread which runs throughout the whole work. The second movement is powerful in nature and reflects struggle and endeavour. The third movement is a beautiful slow melodic poem subtitled Mist of the Forest. A melody carried by the euphonium honours the great Welsh folk melodies we all know and love. The lollipop finale is a rollercoaster ride, taking us to the very edge of band technique. The hymn tune O Iesu Mawr appears though heavily disguised and is a reminder of the composer's Welsh Heritage. The Cory Band under Dr. Robert Childs gave the World premiere of this work during the World Music Contest Gala Concert in Kerkrade, Netherlands July 2009. It later received its British premiere during September of the same year in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, again performed by the Cory Band under the direction of Robert Childs.

The Dirty Duck - Dan Price

The Dirty Duck is named after a public house opposite the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford and was commissioned by cornet superstar Tom Hutchinson.Composer Dan Price explains, "Tom was looking for a solo that was virtuosic in content with strong jazz influences and something of a crowd pleaser. The Dirty Duck was the end result. The piece sits firmly within the big band style, taking influence from the dance bands of the 1940s led by such greats as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count Basie."The first performance of The Dirty Duck was given by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by David Childs on October 1st 2011 at Wiltshire Music Centre. The work's premiere recording features on the commercial disc, Cory In Concert Volume II, performed by Tom Hutchinson with the Cory Band conducted by Robert Childs.

Enter the Galaxies - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

Enter the Galaxies paints a musical picture of the experiences and excitement space exploration has to offer. The music begins with a 'space-like' whirlwind of triplets and semiquavers from the cornets and glockenspiel which accompanies a fanfare from the 'middle' of the band. This quickly leads into a presto section introducing the lyrical principal horn as the soloist. The horn is followed by the euphonium as the flowing melody lines are passed around, juxtaposed by a virtuosic counter-line from the principal cornet. The journey into the unknown is taken up a gear as the music modulates through a variety of keys before featuring the back row cornets playing the central melodic motif. From this point the music grows in intensity before the euphonium and soprano cornet 'lift off' into the finale with glissandi to concert Cs.Following a brief coda, the music comes to a climactic end using the melodic intervals heard throughout the piece with an augmented 5th resolving to the dominant 5th and finally onto a brilliant F major chord to close.Enter the Galaxies is dedicated to Cory Band and received its premi?re in November 2008 at The Sage, Gateshead, as part of the band's winning programme at the Brass in Concert Chamionships. The piece has subsequently been featured as the title track to a CD to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Cory Band.

Hunt the Hare - Elgar Howarth

Hunt the Hare was written for and dedicated to the Cory Band from Wales and was first performed in New York as part of America's bi-centennial celebrations in 1976. Grimethorpe Colliery Band, from England, accompanied Cory on the tour, they both had mining connections and the tour was sponsored by the American Mining Unions.Elgar Howarth has cleverly combined the Welsh jig Hunting the Hare with a quintessentially English tune, A Hunting We Will Go. The work is in the style of a patrol with both bands sounding in the distance, gradually getting nearer and nearer until they pass and gradually disappear into the distance. However, the difference with this patrol is that it combines two tunes in two different keys. Elgar Howarth punctuates the English and Welsh flavour with patriotic tunes from both countries and also utilises bi-tonality to celebrate bi-centennial celebrations.
