Missa Brevis is a major work for choir and brass band for performance in church or in the concert hall. For this mass, there are many performance possibilities depending on the musicians available. The sisters Ruth, Anita and June Pointer from West Oakland in California learned how to sing in the sixties in church where their father was a minister. At the beginning of the 1970s they entered the music business, where they proved to have a mastery of many styles - including rhythm & blues, jazz, and country. However, the Pointer Sisters acquired international fame at the beginning of the eighties with their soul-like pop music. A great hit was the up-tempo number I'm So Excited, which is still a success on every dance floor. This sparkling arrangement by Peter Kleine Schaars certainly provides the excitement that is suggested in the title.

To some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory. Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth BrassBand using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penleehas been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. Not only is it the first time a brass work has been featured in the Hall of Fame, but it was also thehighest new entry. The work has subsequently been recorded by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, on the CD entitled Penlee.Brass Band Grade 4: Advanced Youth and 3rd Section Duration: 13 minutes

Rondeau of the Shepherds," so ran the official title of the famous Dutch Christmas carol 'Midden in de winternacht'. In 1948 wrote Dutch poet and writer Harry Prenen this text. The melody is known by the 17th/18th- century organ composers of suites Daquin, Balbastre and Dandrieu. "Rondeau of the Shepherds" was subtitled "Catalan Christmas Carol". The song itself is because its origins in a Spanish (Catalan probably) Christmas song from the late Middle Ages, "El Desembre congelat. The motives of this song (shepherds, flutes, drums) demonstrate knowledge of the Bible and give a picture of the late medieval Christmas experience. . Perfect as an uptempo intermezzoin a church service.

This march was written in 1919 by Norways own March King Oscar Borg (1851-1930).He was born in the town of Halden in the southeast of Norway and received his education at the Royal Academy in Stockholm, Sweden.Upon his return to Halden he became a driving force in the towns musical life in several respects. He conducted choirs, amateur bands and played the organ in church.Borg was also the conductor of 1. Brigades Musikkorps (today The Norwegian Wind Ensemble) from 1881 to 1918.His significance for the Norwegian military bands and their repertoire is unquestionable.He wrote over 60 marches and he played several instruments; the violin, flute, cornet and the organ.This arrangement was written for Askoy Brass Band in 2021.Svein H. There is also an optional womens choir arrangement (SSAA)included in the set. - The bass line is also challenging and very important. Make it groove!

Lead, Kindly Light is composed by the English composer Charles Henry Purday (1799-1885).This arrangement was originally written for Norwegian band Hjorungavag Brass.Purday was appointed conductor of psalmody at Crown Court ScotsChurch in Covent Garden, London, in the 1840's, during the ministry of Dr. John Cumming. Dr. Cumming's church was so popular that it was said traffic could not move in Bow Street and Drury Lane for the throng of carriages making their way toservices. Purday was a fine vocalist and had sung at the coronation of Queen Victoria. He became a music publisher, and was a pioneer in the movement for copyright law reform.
