Panis Angelicus - Cesar Franck - Philip Sparke

Although Cesar Franck won many prizes during his student days his music was generally unrecognised by his contemporaries. His pieces were written in the romantic style whilst retaining a classical structure and his later compositions were referred to as 'cathedrals of sound'. Panis Angelicus is poetic and almost serene and this arrangement by Philip Sparke retains all of the beauty of the original.

The Great Salvation War (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Curnow, James

James Curnow was inspired to compose this work after reading 'Marching to Glory', a history of The Salvation Army in the USA. The writer of the book, Dr. Edward H. McKinley, was a colleague of Curnow on the faculty of Asbury College and a member of The Salvation Army Student Fellowship Band. The work was written for this band and premiered by them at the Centennial National Congress in 1980 which was held at Asbury College. Curnow has endeavoured to capture the spirit of early day Salvationists as they gave themselves completely to the great salvation war. Three songs support the three-part structure; 1) Stand like the brave 2) In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust 3) Rescue the perishing.

Academic Festival Overture - Johannes Brahms

In 1881, Brahms accepted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Breslau University in Poland. For the occasion, he wrote his Academic Festival Overture, for orchestra, basing it on student songs. It is a splendid example of a serious composer writing a piece of musical "fun".Romantic in style, the composer's great skill is evident in his linking of the tunes, and his different treatment of them.In performance, there is rich scope for expression, for tenderness, boisterousness and high spirits, as well as thoughtfulness and an underlying purpose are all present in the music. The Overture ends with a typically Brahmsian climax, built into a welter of instrumental colour. The arrangement for brass band is by Denis Wright.

    Jack in a Box - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

From the many musicians I have had the privilege to compose for this piece has probably been the most enjoyable. The reason being was because I was approached by members of the Bilton Silver (Rugby) Band to compose a xylophone solo for one of their young percussionists Jack Fisher. Jack is no stranger to me as I have had the privilege to teach him whilst he has been a student with the National Children's Brass Band of Great Britain. He certainly is a player to watch out for in the future and not only is he talented; he is also a great character as well. When the members of Bilton Silver Band conversed with me about the proposed commission, they said they wanted a solo that represented Jack's cheeky and fun loving nature. They also wanted a solo that wasn't too demanding for the young starlet and so it gave the opportunity for other up and coming percussionists to play as well. The piece is quick and fun and it provides a solo for percussionists who are developing as players to work on. It is enjoyable to listen to and it's proving to be a bit of a foot-tapper as well with audiences. When I was a child I had an old Jack-in-a-box toy that played the nursery rhyme pop goes the weasel before Jack popped out and scared the life out of me. So for a bit of fun I have quoted pop goes the weasel in the solo which aptly lead me to the suitable title for the piece Jack in a Box.Paul Lovatt-Cooper
