Symphony for Double Brass on a theme of Purcell 1995 marked the tercentenary of Purcell's death, and my new score Revelation has been written as a tribute to his music and the ornate and confident spirit of his age. There are five major sections: 1 Prologue 2 Variations on a ground bass I 3 Fugue 4 Variations on a ground bass II 5 Epilogue and Resurrection The score uses many features of the Baroque Concerto Grosso, and arranges players in two equal groups from which soloists emerge to play in a variety ofvirtuoso ensembles. It quotes freely from Purcell's own piece Three Parts on a Ground in which he has composed a brilliant sequence of variations over a repeating six-note bass figure. This original motif can be heard most clearly beneath the duet for Cornet 5 and Soprano at the beginning of the 2nd section. There is, of course, a religious dimension to Revelation as the title suggests, and the score is prefaced by lines by the 17th century poet John Donne. His Holy Sonnet paraphrases the Book of Revelation in which the dead are raised at the sounds of the last trumpet. Donne's trumpets are themselves placed stereophonically ". . . At the round Earth's imagined corners" and it is this feature that today's players represent as they move around the performing area. Their final apocalyptic fanfares can be heard at the close of the score, as Purcell's music re-enters in a lasting tribute to England's first composer of genius. The New Jerusalem was commissioned by the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, and first performed by them at City Hall, Salisbury on 20 April 1990 and then the following day in London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. The original version was thus intended for their very large group of gifted players, and is available from the Novello Hire library.This present Contest Version is a thorough revision of that original score, redesigned for a conventional number of players, and recast as a score which contains considerable scope for solo performers within the band.Recorded on Polyphonic QPRL056D National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and Gala Concert - 1992

The Long Cloud of Witnesses (Brass Band - Score only) - Downie, Kenneth
This music was written for the Amsterdam Staff Band's 50th Anniversary. The idea for using this theme in appreciation of the pioneers of the band who had gone before came to me during the thanksgiving service for my own mother's life. She was a life-long Salvationist, and the large crowd that gathered for her thanksgiving in Winchester gave such an inspiring rendition of this hymn at the end of the service that it moved me to write the music. In the closing pages of the score I have tried to suggest that final parade when those who loved the Lord join the 'long cloud of witnesses' in procession to their eternal home. - Kenneth Downie

£37.95The Four Elements (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band - Score only)
Partita for Solo Euphonium and Brass BandThe Four Elements was written for Gary Curtin and the Black Dyke Band as part of a recording project of Martin Ellerby's brass band music. The composer, having previously written a large scale concerto for the euphonium, decided to write something much more concise though still enabling the soloist to display flair and lyricism in equal measure. Each movement is approximately 2 minutes long, a set of miniatures, based on the four elements of earth, water, air and fire, and are given their Latin manes of terra, aqua, aer and ignis in the score. The term partita is used to indicate that the work is a collection, or suite, of pieces and in keeping with former examples, uses both song and dance forms to provide suitable musical structures.Duration: 8.00

Jesus Shall Conquer (Brass Band - Score only) - Downie, Kenneth
This music was written for Salvation Brass. It is declamatory in style and would fit the role of an intrada. The words associated are by a former General of The Salvation Army, Albert Orsborn, and have a very optimistic tone, consistent with the Christian faith. The chorus reads: Jesus shall conquer, lift up the strain! Evil shall perish and righteousness shall reign.The tune used is Pilgrims (T.B. 548), by Henry Thomas Smart, the 19th Century English composer and organist, who also wrote another of my favourite hymn tunes, Regent Square. Keeping a steady tempo will help to preserve the dignity of the theme and also help to avoid the busier passages in the score from being rushed. As ever, articulation and dynamics require careful attention.

March Of The Hours (Brass Band - Score only) - Soderstrom, Emil
March of the Hours was first performed at Star Lake Music Camp in 1962 with the composer supplying an informative listening guide which was printed in the published score; "The phrases are of 12 crotchets each (three bars) signifying the 12 hours. Up to the trio, the music describes the headlong search for pleasure by the thoughtless. Abruptly, the trio brings 'I need thee every hour', but an episode employing the original theme pushes it aside until it reappears, this time against a background of chimes of the full hour (Westminster chimes). While the hour strikes 12, a paraphrase of the opening strains of 'When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more' is heard. Here the music stops, to be followed by the trumpet sounding (cornets and trombones) and the rest of the band responds with 'When the roll is called up yonder' with a final 'I'll be there'."

The Canadian (Brass Band - Score only) - Merritt, James
The centrepiece of this decidedly patriotic and stately march is the Canadian anthem 'O Canada' although the original score (1932) refers to a different set of words ('O Canaan'). The anthem is presented in successively more ornate fashion in the trio section, the musical drama building like a Sousa march so that a da capo is not required. While now considered to be bit of a 'war horse', the march remains great fun to play.

Concerto After VivaldiDuring his lifetime, Antonio Vivaldi was known as 'il Prete Rosso', the Red Priest, thanks to his youthful ordination and his flaming red hair. The son of a violinist at San Marco in Venice, Vivaldi's musical pedigree was impeccable and an excellent start to his career was coupled with astounding energy and productivity. His vast output of concerti grossi, using soloists in groups, inspired this composition and performers may choose appropriate stage positions for the various groupings of cornets and trombones, spaced around the performance area. The score quotes freely from some of Vivaldi's most popular compositions, including 'Winter' from The Four Seasons, the motet Nisi Dominus, the famous Gloria and the fugue from the Concerto grosso in D minor found in L'Estro Armonico.However, it is the musical spirit of Vivaldi, a close contemporary of both Handel and Casanova, that inspired this music, which should be played with a mixture of accuracy and abandoned virtuosity. The musical images in this piece have clear associations in the composer's mind with individual Venetian locations, ranging from bustling street scenes to vaulted interiors, and describing the famous journey down the Grand Canal, past the Doge's Palace, to the Ospedale della Pieta where Vivaldi worked for so many years.Duration: 14.00

Christus Victor (Brass Band - Score only) - Downie, Kenneth
This is a glorious selection of music to celebrate the supreme victory of Jesus Christ. The predominant theme of 'Crown Him!' comes from the Thomas Kelly hymn 'Look, ye saints! The sight is glorious' which are associated with Henry Smart's tune 'Regent Square'. Also featured are Andre Crouch's song 'Soon and very soon' as well as Dave Bilborough's 'All hail the lamb'. In the final pages of the score, all three tunes come together in a statement of affirmation.
