The Dreaded Groove and Hook is an up-tempo acid-jazz number that draws inspiration from bands like Jamiroquai and The Youngblood Brass Band. The groove in question is the main tune that is shared round the band, whilst the hook, in 'pop' terms, is the catchy bit of the song. The whole band joins in to play a huge 'riff' that acts as a chorus to the jazz-like verses.The piece was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and The Leyland Band, who gave the first performance as part of their programme for the Brass in Concert Championships, held at The Sage, Gateshead on the 16th November 2008. Herbert Rive contributed just two compositions to Salvation Army music, the other being the festival march The Kings Command. Spirit of Joy was awarded first prize in the 1953 70th Anniversary March Competition in New Zealand. Rive uses a short syncopated motif based on the first few notes of the Salvation Army tune If you keep singing to tie all aspects of this march together.

This march's title is not patriotic but relates to the Salvation Army flag, a symbol of spiritual liberation and salvation. The score notes, written by the editor, Lieut-Colonel Frederick Hawkes, refer to 'the well-contrasted melodies, the balanced effect of the scoring and ever-changing effects in regard to light and shade'.

A veritable showcase for the brass band, featuring each section in turn (cornets, horns and baritones, trombones, euphoniums and basses, percussion), the music concludes with an exciting and dramatic presentation of the theme.

£29.95Judd: The Gathering - Festival Prelude
'The Gathering' was written at the request of Canadian Staff Bandmaster John Lam. The composer was asked to write a concert opener for the Canadian Staff Band's trip to Holland, Germany and London as part of the ISB120 Celebrations in 2011. The well-known Dutch hymn, 'We gather together', was chosen as the source material for the piece. The melody goes through a couple different settings before a rousing conclusion.

Inspired by John Bunyan's allegory of the same name, the composer paints a sound picture of spiritual warfare between the forces of good and evil. Martin Luther's Reformation chorale Ein feste Burg (A Mighty Fortress is our God) serves as the rallying point for 'good' forces led by Mansoul. This brilliant score, A Salvation Army epic, serves as an example of marvellous invention, colourful scoring and compact formal symmetry.

This march derives its title from the American hymn When the roll is called up yonder which is used as a bass solo. British expatriate William Broughton became a master of the American street march, the trio and break-up strain of this march being unmistakeably American and reminiscent of the golden age of American band music under Sousa, King and Fillmore.
