Three Gentle Giantswas commissioned by Grenland International Brass Festival as a test piece for the 2nd division in 2008.Three Gentle Giants. The three giants each have their own monologue which leads into a conversation. They gather recognition and respect from each others views as the dialogue evolves. Eventually they find a more nutual and singular expression to their conversation.The giants are old with a long life behind them. This can be heard through a slow, melancholic waltz. A waltz is dance commonly linked to festiveoccasions, such as weddings, but for the giants it holds much more significance. It gives room to think about people they have met, placesthey have been, and all that life has given them.Quietly it ends, more or less like it began. In The Pioneers Philip Sparke salutes the bicentenary of an expedition by two all time American heroes - Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were commissioned by US President Thomas Jefferson to find the headwaters of the Missouri and a route to the Pacific following the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the USA. They set out as the 'Corps of Discovery' from Louisville, Kentucky, in May 1804 and not only did they succeed in reaching the Pacific through hostile territory, but also found their way back - in 3 years! The piece is not descriptive of the journey but gives the composer the opportunity to celebrate the 200th anniversary of this amazing feat. Add atouch of the wild-west to any concert with this exciting work.

Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky's masterpiece Boris Godunov. It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself, as well as posthumous editions andorchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken), Shostakovich and others.The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin, between the Cathedral of the Assumption and theCathedral of Archangel Michael, the year is 1598. After being crowned as Tsar, Boris Godunov acknowledges the people's acclamations and the bells of the two cathedrals, as well as many churches within the vicinity, canbeheard ringing out across St Petersburg.Available here are the score and parts for Mussorgsky's Coronation Scene (Boris Godunov), as arranged for Brass Band by Phillip Littlemore.

It is important that energy and pace is upheld all the way up until the next to last page. Dissonances are present several places, but the voice leading is diatonic within the given scale.The whole piece is based on one single scale: F melodic minor with lowered second degree. It is notated as a concert F major scale with two accidentals. Feel free to use it during warm-ups!
