£24.50Keep The Rhythm Going - Neil Brownless
Keep the Rhythm Going was written for Abingdon Concert Band during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic as a tribute to musicians around the world who found ways to play together virtually in order to 'keep the rhythm going'. This exciting piece will be a great opener for any concert or contest programme and is available for both brass band and wind band. When performing the wind band arrangement the Cor Anglais, Eb Clarinet and Alto Clarinet parts are optional and can be omitted without affecting the music. John Rutter's music is known across the world for its simplicity and memorable melodies. The 'Pie Jesu' from his requiem is certainly no exception. First performed in Dallas, Texas in 1985, the 6 movements completed Rutter's setting of the Roman Catholic Mass. The third movement (the 'Pie Jesu') is typical of the composer, featuring a strong melody line with subtle accompaniments. Now arranged for Solo Cornet by Adam Rutter, this slow melody allows the soloist to shine in one of the finest and most famous settings of the work to date. A great addition to any concert & soloists repertoire.

The music of James Horner is known around the world for his strong, heart-warming melody lines that featured in such films at 'Titanic' and 'An American Tail'. Released in 1988, 'The Land Before Time' was made by the same film creators of 'An American Tail' and so, James Horner and Will Jennings were the obvious choice to create the movie's soundtrack, following the success of 'Somewhere Out There' (from 'An American Tail'). They didn't disappoint, and the main title track 'If We Hold On Together' became a success both on the screen and off when it was released as a single by Diana Ross in 1989. Now arranged by Gavin Somerset, this release will take a generation back in time to the story of Littlefoot, who embarks upon journey with 4 friends as they search for the Great Valley. A great item for all bands

Programme notes:The hauntingly beautiful theme from Jupiter, from The Planets Suite has a rare qualityexpressing both optimism and dignity which makes it a popular choice for many formalpublic events such as opening and award ceremonies.The tune is originally found in the Jupiter movement from the large-scale work fororchestra called 'The Planets Suite'. Written by the English composer Gustav Holt ThePlanets Suite is thought to be his finest work.The theme has a steady 3/4 rhythm which provides a contrast in terms of tempo andmeter to the rest of the movement, and has been made popular as a patriotic song called'I vow to Thee My Country'.Performance notes:This arrangement makes use of a gradual increase in dynamics, beginning p and ending ff.With this gradual increase in dynamics is a gradual increase in the scoring starting offwith only the lower instruments playing p and ending up with everyone playing ff.The percussion part is very minimal in this arrangement (only 2 notes for the suspendedcymbal) and is an optional part.Just before the final chord there is a cut off marked in the parts. In searching for a common link between the brass band traditions of the various European countries that commissioned this work, I considered the fact that hymns have always played an important role in the relationship that brass bands have with their particular communities; and thus I turned to a well-known Lutheran chorale, Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God), written around 1636 by Martin Rinkart, with the melody attributed to Johann Crger. A number of composers have incorporated this chorale into their music, most famously J.S.Bach in his Cantatas no. 79 and 192, and Mendelssohn in the Lobsegang movement of his 2nd Symphony (the harmonization of which is usually used when this hymn is sung).It seemed fitting therefore for me to return to a compositional form I have used many times before (Variations) and to write a work based on this hymn. I have used it in a similar way to that which I employed in my Variations on Laudate Dominum of 1976 - that is, rather than writing a set of variations using elaborations of the complete tune, I have taken various phrases from the chorale and used them within the context of other musical material, applying an overall symphonic process of continuous variation and development. The structure, or sub-divisions of the work, which is through composed and plays without a break, is as follows: Prelude, Capriccio, La Danza 1, Processional, La Danza 2, Arias and Duets, Fuga Burlesca, Chorale, and Postlude.The work is also partly autobiographical - in the manner say of Strauss's Ein Heldenleben - in that I have incorporated into the score brief quotations from many of my other major works for brass band. In that respect, The World Rejoicing sums up a particular facet of my life as a composer, and reflects the admiration I have always had for what is surely one of the great amateur music-making traditions in the world.The World Rejoicing is dedicated 'in loving memory of my brother', Bramwell Logan Gregson, who sadly passed away in the Autumn of 2018.Edward Gregson

The World Rejoicing was commissioned by the National Brass Band Associations of Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and the British Open, as the test piece for their competitions in 2020/21. Although the work was completed in 2019, the pandemic of 2020 meant that these competitions were postponed until 2021/22. The title of this clever arrangement reveals the Christmas song it is based on. The melody can be traced back to a French folksong from the 18th century which is now known around the world. In France it is called Les anges dans nos campagnes, in Germany it is most widely known as Engel auf den Feldern singen and in England it was originally called Angels From the Realms of Glory but it often known as Angels We Have Heard on High. Everyone will rejoice upon hearing the 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' refrain!
