Moon Song, Sun Dance - Philip Sparke

Moon Song, Sun Dance was commissioned by flugel horn virtuoso, Claude Romailler, and premiered by him at the Swiss National Solo and Quartet Championships in April 2012.As the title implies, the work is in two contrasting movements, which can be performed separately or together.Moon Song opens with a flowing modal theme, which the soloist embellishes before the band takes centre stage. A central section brightens the mood with a new melody over the lightest of accompaniments; this is once again developed by the soloist until the original theme reappears, played by the band. This introduces a cadenza for the soloist which either closes the movement, or can be extended to link directly to the second movement.Sun Dance is a vivace 6/8 scherzo which opens with a flourish from the band. The soloist then introduces the main theme, which in turn is taken up by the band. A short bridge passage heralds a change of key and a new melody from the soloist. A brief central interlude then introduces a change of meter and recalls the main melody of Moon Song, before a recapitulation leads to a florid coda, which brings the work to a close.Solo part: difficulty 5

Crimson Moon (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Vail, Dale

Crimson Moon is a work written for Solo Trombone and Brass Band. The work was inspired by a red moon that appeared over Wellington in 2014. Crimson Moon depicts a fictional theory that the colour was caused by a raging fire on the moon's surface. The trombone soloist is a pair of eyes experiencing the phenomenon first hand, depicting the sights, excitement, and adrenalin that could be invoked by such an event. The band is the environment around the soloist, unpredictable and exciting.

SEAL LULLABY, The (Flugel Horn Solo with Brass Band) - Whitacre, Eric - Sharman, Paul

This loving and dreamlike work captures the undulating rhythm of a mother rocking her child to sleep. The piece was inspired by classic Rudyard Kipling: "Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us, At rest in the hollows that rustle between." Magical!

Lake of Tenderness - Ben Hollings

Ben Hollings provides a delicate, atmospheric concert work utilising extended harmony reminiscent of modern choral composers such as Eric Whitacre. The work is technically modest, consisting of sustained chords interspersed with moving crotchet lines and lyrical solo contributions, and is accessible to bands of all levels. The work takes its title from ‘Lacus Lenitatis’ - one of the Latin named basaltic plains on the earth’s moon, thought by early astronomers to be lakes. Atmospheric in nature, the music seeks to evoke imagery of the solitary moon in the still of space. As we all know, simple music is often the most effective, and this is certainly the case here. Hollings’ chordal and lyrical writing creates a truly beautiful work that would be welcome in any concert programme.Lake of Tenderness was commissioned by Dr. Robert Childs and premiered by Grimethorpe Colliery Band at the 2015 Brass in Concert Festival, at The Sage, Gateshead.

As the work develops the turbulent ebb and flow of the storm increases in its ferocity with solo spots for solo cornet, solo euphonium,
