Visions of Kolkhis (Brass Band - Score and Parts)

Visions of Kolkhis was commissioned by Jason Katsikaris and the Leyland Band as a finale for their appearance at the 2009 Brass in Concert Championship Inspired by Jason Katsikaris's Greek lineage, the subject of the work could be considered a metaphor for his impact on the British brass band scene, and the Leyland Band's commitment to striving for excellence.Written in thee continuous sections, the work paints a vivid picture of the island of Kolkhis, a place instrumental in so many tales in Greek mythology. The music represents three individual stories; Jason and the Argonauts, the Golden Fleece, and the liberation of Prometheus by Hercules. However, musical material is drawn from the Leyland Band's signature march, Harold Moss's The Royal Tiger, named after the bus made by Leyland Vehicles in the 1950's.

    Hinemoa (Score Only)

Hinemoa, the beautiful daughter of Amukaria, a great Maori chief, had seen Tutanekai, a chief and brave warrior from the island of Mokoia, only once, during a tribal gathering; yet she knew she loved him dearly. Amukaria counselled his daughter to forget this man, whose flute-playing Hinemoa heard as it came, soft but clear, across the lake which separated them.At night she went to the shore and listened. The sound of the flute spoke to Hinemoa, giving her courage. When Tutanekai managed to get a message to Hinemoa, her mind was made up.On the next moonless night she entered the dark, cold waters of the lake, using empty gourds as floats. She was determined to swim the long distance to her lover. Tutanekai's flute-playing kept her going, until at last she reached the shores of Mokoia.Great was the joy when the lovers at last met, the rocks echoing Tutanekai's cry - 'HINEMOA'.

Where is Elvis? for Brass Band - Paul Saggers

Where Is Elvis? takes inspiration from one of the most enduring mysteries in popular culture: the speculation surrounding the death - and possible survival - of Elvis Presley. Written as a theme and variations, the piece begins by presenting an 'Elvis' theme before moving through a series of imagined scenarios, each drawn from well-known conspiracy theories. The journey starts with the story most often told: that Presley died in his bathroom, a reminder of the tension between fame and vulnerability. From there, the music explores the idea of mafia involvement, evoking the shadowy narrativesthat surround celebrity life. The next variation leaps into the fantastical, imagining Elvis abducted by aliens and transported beyond earthly bounds. This is followed by a more domestic theory: Elvis living quietly as a gardener at Graceland, hidden in plain sight. Another variation considers claims that he became a Christian pastor, suggesting a turn toward redemption and spiritual renewal. A reflective section then acknowledges the inevitability of loss while questioning whether cultural memory ever truly fades. The work then revisits the glittering mythology of Las Vegas, acity forever linked to Presley's legend, before moving to the notion of a secret island in the South Pacific - a utopian escape from fame. Finally, the piece closes with the idea that Elvis lives on through the airwaves, his voice continuing to shape the soundscape of popular culture.

The Falcon in the Snow for Brass Band - Paul Saggers

The Falcon in the Snow is a musical depiction of British explorer Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to reach the South Pole, the work is divided into five sections, using quotes from Falcon Scott's own journal:Saturday November 26, 1910 - "We advertised our start at 3.P.M., and at three minutes to that hour the Terra Nova pushed off from the jetty".Robert Falcon Scott led the British Antarctic Expedition from 1910 to 1913, aiming to be the first to reach the South Pole. Leaving from Cardiff, Wales, in June 1910, the expedition arrived at the Ross Ice Shelf in January 1911. Scott's team established base camp at Cape Evans on Ross Island and began preparations for the push to the Pole.Thursday February 2, 1911 - "The Blizzard, Nature's protest-the crevasse, Nature's pitfall".The expedition faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather, difficult terrain, and the logistics of transporting supplies and equipment over long distances. Scott divided his men into different teams for the Pole attempt, with one led by himself and the other by Ernest Shackleton, who was eventually sent home due to illness.Tuesday January 16, 1912 - "The Norwegians have forestalled us and are first at the pole. It is a terrible disappointment, and I am very sorry for my loyal companions".Scott's team set out for the South Pole, enduring extreme conditions and struggling with low food supplies. They reached the Pole on January 17, 1912, only to discover that the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them to it by 34 days.Thursday January 18, 1912 - "We have turned our back now on the goal of our ambition and must face our 800 miles of solid dragging".Disheartened, the team began the long and arduous journey back to base camp. Tragically, Scott and his companions-Edward Wilson, Henry Bowers, Lawrence Oates, and Edgar Evans-perished during their return journey. They were slowed by extreme weather and suffering from exhaustion and malnutrition.Thursday March 29, 1912 - "For God's sake look after our people".Their final camp, found in November 1912, became their tomb. Scott's journal, recovered with his body, provides a poignant record of their struggles.Despite the tragic outcome, Scott's expedition contributed significantly to the understanding of the Antarctic region. The scientific research and specimens collected during the journey provided valuable insights into the continent's natural history and biology. Additionally, the expedition stimulated public interest in polar exploration and science, leaving a legacy in the chronicles of exploration.

Caribbean Calypso (Brass Band) Rob Wiffin

This vivacious calypso seeks to capture the vital rhythm and spirit of Caribbean dance music. It was written just after a visit to the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. Calypso music was everywhere and its beat was highly infectious. I tried to catch the essence of calypso in the music and I hope that the sense of fun comes through to both the players and listeners.Duration: Approx. 3.00 minutesDifficulty Level: MediumThis PDF download includes the full score and parts.Sheet music available at www.brassband.co.uk (UK) or https://satradecentral.org (USA)

Les Chasseresses from 'Sylvia' (Brass Band) Delibes arr. Rob Bushnell

Clement Philibert Leo Delibes was a French composer, best known for his ballets and operas, including works such as Lakme (with its famous "Flower Duet"), Coppelia and Sylvia (both key works in the development of modern ballet). The latter started as a play, Aminta, by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, which Delibes set to music. It was then adapted for the Paris Opera with rehearsals starting in August 1875. The premiere took place on 14 June 1876 and was the first ballet to be shown at the newly-built Opera Garnier. Whilst the scenery and costumes were created by top artists and designers (Cheret and Lacoste), it was Delibes's music that shown thrown, being said to have saved the production, preventing the ballet from drifting into obscurity.Sylvia is said to be one of the first modern ballets, with Tchaikovsky remarking to composer Sergei Taneyev upon its ingenuity: "... the first ballet, where the music constitutes not only the main, but the only interest. What charm, what elegance, what richness of melody, rhythm, harmony." Although Swan Lake, a contemporary to Sylvia, is considered one of the best ballets there is, Tchaikovsky preferred Sylvia to his own work, saying Swan Lake was "poor stuff in comparison". Tchaikovsky said to Taneyev, "I was ashamed. If I had known this music early then, of course, I would not have written Swan Lake". The music to Sylvia, rather than setting only the mood, also sets the action and is noted for its use of leitmotifs - Delibes was an admirer of Wagner - and more dominant use of brass and wind. The most famous piece from this ballet is the Pizzicati in the third act.Act I of the ballet takes place in sacred wood, where creatures are worshipping before Eros when Sylvia arrives with her huntresses to mock the god of love. Aminta, a lowly shepherd and infatuated with Sylvia, protects the deity and Sylvia is wounded by Eros's arrow. The hunter Orion kidnaps Sylvia, whilst Eros revives Aminta. Act II takes place in Orion's Island cave, where Sylvia tries to bribe Orion with jewels and wine. Unsuccessful, she appeals to Eros for help, who arrives and takes her to the temple of Diana (where the final act takes place). Orion and Aminta fight, Sylvia and Orion cause the goddess of the hunt, Diana, to be outraged, smiting Orion and denying the love of Aminta and Sylvia. Eros shows Diana a vision, which changes her mind and the couple finally come together. This brilliant and lively fanfare that introduces the huntresses in the first act is arranged here for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. The piece has been lowered by a tone compared to the original.A recording of the original composition can be found here https://youtu.be/6yoGrUH38PI?si=0L0bFa1qXnYNvkR3Duration: Approx. 3.10 minutesDifficulty Level: 1st Section +This PDF download includes the full score and parts. For Uncommon Valor (Brass Band) Andrew E. Lawson trs. Andrew Wainwright

A rousing fanfare for brass and percussion, this work by Andrew E. Lawson was the winner of the prestigious Dallas Winds Fanfare Competition 2019. Here it is has been transcribed for brass band by Andrew Wainwright. The composer writes: 'In honor of the 1,177 crewman killed among the battleship USS Arizona, For Uncommon Valor is inspired by the story of the brave men, women, and children who witnessed, fought, and endured the tragic events of December 7, 1941 at Pearl Harbor, and across the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The story of Pearl Harbor, however, does not end with a sunken battleship, or a defeated nation. A mighty nation, 'the sleeping giant', awoke to face the challenge at hand and claim victory for those who could not claim it for themselves. The uncommon valor displayed by the men and women of the Pacific Fleet brought forth the greatest fighting force ever seen and put on display for all to see, the strength and resilience of the American people.'To view a video of Dallas Brass Band performing the work please visit: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hk-skGoNnroSheet music available from:UK - www.brassband.co.ukUSA - www.solidbrassmusic.comInstrumentation:Soprano Cornet EbSolo Cornet BbRepiano Cornet Bb2nd Cornet Bb3rd Cornet BbFlugel Horn BbSolo Horn Eb1st Horn Eb2nd Horn Eb1st Baritone Bb2nd Baritone Bb1st Trombone Bb2nd Trombone BbBass TromboneEuphonium BbBass EbBass BbTimpaniPercussion 1-4
