£104.99Kefas - Rob Goorhuis
The composition Kefas was written for the brass band 'Apollo' from Grou (The Netherlands), by order of the Unisono Foundation, the organisation for wind music in The Netherlands.The assignment was given on account of earning the Champions Title during the Dutch Brass Band Championships in the year 2001 (4th division). The theme of the composition links the tradition of the village Grou, not to celebrate Sint Nicolaas but Sint Pieter.By this typical Dutch festivity (in December) the holy Nicolaas gives presents to the children. It is a popular custom where young and old participate. Grou is the only place where this is not done by Sint Nicolaas but by Sint Pieter.Apart from that, on the 22th of Februari, a lot of festivities that take place,resemble those of the Sinterklaas celebration. In the composition two Sint Pieter songs are processed, set through bible scenes, wherein in among others the visit of Christ to the house of Peter's Mother-in-law and the calling of Peter are depicted. The title refers to the pronouncement of Christ, where he named Peter the rock on which he shall build his church. The Hebrew word for rock is Kephas. Kefas was premiered in 2003.

Nigel Hess' vivacious and colourful A Christmas Overture, originally commissioned as an orchestral work by John Rutter for his 2007 Christmas Festival, proved an instant success with audience and orchestra alike. Traditional carols, skilfully juxtaposed and interwoven, provide the thematic material. These include Ding Dong! Merrily On High; Il Est N Le Divin Enfant; Infant Holy, Infant Lowly; Personent Hodie; We Wish You A Merry Christmas and Angels From The Realms Of Glory, which brings the overture to a majestic close. Fragments of other carols appear along the way to enrich the texture of what is surely one of the mostattractive pieces written for the festive season. Brass Band Grade 4/5. Set in the traditional slow, dramatic bolero style, the work builds steadily from a distinctive percussion figure as the melody passes through different instrumental groups. With its growing intensity and rich scoring, this piece offers an engaging and atmospheric addition to concert programmes.2266: Tell the story (Barrie Gott)This work continues the Swing series that began nearly 40 years ago with Light'Walk. After a bold introduction, the melody unfolds through unison and close'harmony writing, leading to a Flugel Horn solo with scope for improvisation. The well'known hymn I Love to Tell the Story is heard in a New Orleans style before a modulation launches an energetic shout chorus and lively coda. Smooth, relaxed swing style is key throughout.2267: The old rugged cross (Erik Leidzn)This arrangement by Erik Leidzn is an early and lesser'known setting of a well'loved hymn, rediscovered during research into his work. Edited from a rare score found in the USA East Music Department archives, it demonstrates Leidzn's economical and effective style, creating a practical and expressive arrangement at a time when concise, serviceable hymn settings were greatly needed.2268: Heaven came down! (Michael Cooper)Inspired by William Booth's famous challenge to use contemporary styles for sacred purpose, this piece blends high'energy jazz'fusion big'band writing with a joyful gospel hymn. Driven by rhythm, syncopation and precision, the music proclaims its message of transformation and spiritual joy with vitality, clarity and infectious swing.

It features several musical references (Showers of blessing (T.B. 411), I would be thy holy temple (S.A.S.B. 591), Come, ye thankful people, come (S.A.S.B. 9), All the promises of God are sure (S.A.S.B. 893) and Count your blessings (T.B. 183)), opening with the announcement that 'With timbrel and drum, and with flags they come' (N.S.Y.P. January 1977) to commence worship and witness in a new area of the city.1388: Holy Forever (arr. Marcus Venables)This is an arrangement of the popular worship song, written by Brian Johnson, Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Jenn Johnson and Phil Wickham.1389: Goodness of God (arr. Paul Sharman) This is an arrangement of the well-known worship song, written by Ben Fielding, Brian Johnson, Ed Cash, Jason Ingram and Jenn Johnson.1390: The first Nowell (Noel Jones)This is an arrangement of the beautiful carol The first Nowell (C.C. 86). It commences with the motif 'Born is the King' which which is referenced throughout the work and the finishes with the spirited 'Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel'.1391: Gloria a Dios (Ian Clarke)Translated into English, the Spanish phrase 'Gloria a Dios' means 'Glory to God'. The style of this music has its roots in the small musical combinations that entertain the crowds in some Latin American towns and villages (many of which are Spanish speaking, hence the title). Once a melodic idea had taken hold, the chorus Jesus saves me now! (S.A.S.B. 478) seemed to fit perfectly, the words and the music complementing each other in this testament of praise.
