French Military March (Marche Militaire Francaise) is the final movement of the Algerian Suite (Suite Algerienne) by Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921). The suite was first performed in 1880 and this stirring march has become a strong orchestral favourite.This arrangement was prepared for the highly successful 1995 tour of Switzerland by the William Davis Construction Group Band (music director, Dr Keith M Wilkinson). It has been performed regularly since that date, always receiving enthusiastic audience acclaim.

St Julien is a town near the French/Belgian border which witnessed several battles during WW1. The composer Arthur W. Hughes (1870-1950) was born in Kingston, Ontario, and left home when he was quite young to perform with circus bands in US. He wrote several marches and a few other compositions but this one, dating from 1918, is the most well-known. The march also works as a fast circus march. Here it has been expertly arranged for brass band by Dr. Keith M. Wilkinson. The movement which Byrd called Marche Before The Battell became known as The Earl of Oxford's March and it appears with that title in an early manuscript copy of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. Written while Byrd was at the height of his powers, it still stirs the soul to this day. A perfect opener for your concert performances.
