Bless 'Em All - Various - Gavin Somerset

Keeping spirits high during World War II was essential, and music played a huge part. Darrol Barry's excellent arrangement 'Keep Smiling Through' has been pleasing audiences for years and can probably be found in most brass bands libraries across the country. This new release of popular war time songs including 'Wish Me Luck, As You Wave Me Goodbye', 'We're Going To Hang Out The Washing', 'Kiss Me Goodnight Sgt. Major', 'Good Morning', 'Bless 'Em All' and the highlight of the piece, the slow, hair raising middle movement 'Apple Blossom Time', is being released to coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the Battle Of Britain. All of these songs were sung as the London population camped out in the underground stations. This arrangement will get the feet tapping as audiences sing along to the lively pieces and then sends shivers down their spines with the gorgeous 'Apple Blossom Time' featuring in the middle of the medley. This is a piece not to be missed and should belong in all bands libraries.Whilst rehearsals are suspended due to Covid-19, we are making some parts available to download FREE for home use and practice, alongside a downloadable backing track to play along to. Song for the Frontline - John Barber

Song for the Frontline was composed in April 2020 during the UK’s lockdown imposed to limit the spread of the deadly Coronavirus. Amongst many other consequences, the lockdown brought about the end of ensemble rehearsals and as such, Song for the Frontline was released as the third of Foden’s ‘Stay at Home Banding’ performances. Written to help raise funds for the NHS and other frontline services, the music was recorded by band members individually at home with the ‘premiere’ given on Thursday 16th April 2020 alongside a video featuring colleagues working with the Police, Fire services, the NHS and within other frontline roles. The music is a reflective ballad with a catchy motif that unifies the verse, whilst the chorus builds to highlight the emotional context of the time in which it was written. The piece is composed to be accessible both to the listener and performer hopefully allowing all the opportunity to take part and enjoy the music. Also available to purchase in print from(external webpage, opens in new window)

Bare Necessities, The - Christopher Bond

First heard in the original 1967 movie, this familiar tune is featured again in the acclaimed 2016 version. In this clever arrangement for band, the arranger utilizes a peppy 2-beat style, beginning with the trombones taking the melody. Every section of the band soon gets into the act, including a solo or soli for tuba, and a brief slower section for a Dixieland combo leading to the rousing finish. This song is guaranteed to be a highlight at any concert. Note: whilst the demo video demonstrates the concert band arrangement, the version available to purchase on this website is the brass band transcription by Christopher Bond.

Where Eagles Sing - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

This work was commissioned by Philip Biggs for the Great Northern Brass Arts Festival 2006 and was written for Black Dyke Band and first performed by them in Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on 2nd September 2006.The inspiration for this piece came from a recent trip to Florida and to the Bird Sanctuary in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom. I was lucky enough to be in the audience to see the rare bird's show where I witnessed some fabulous looking and endangered birds that were trained to perform different tricks that wowed the audience. The highlight for me was the conclusion of the show where the most awesome sight greeted us as an American Bald Eagle soared over the audience. That particular breed of Eagle has been a very rare bird of late. With so few in numbers, it nearly became a member of the sad group of animals that are extinct. The host of the show took great delight in informing the audience that the fantastic creature is now officially safe and no longer classed as endangered. This made a great impact on me as the Eagle is an amazing bird, huge in size and power and yet so graceful in flight. When Philip Biggs invited me to write a piece for the Great Northern Brass Arts Festival, I had no doubt about my inspiration and wanted to create a piece that paid homage to the American Bald Eagle. This piece is everything associated with the Eagle; bold, powerful and graceful and now free to soar and sing in the American homelands.Paul Lovatt-Cooper (August 2006)

When the lights go down - Kevin Houben

Kevin Houben created with When the Lights Go Down, a wonderful chorale that can be a moment of reflection in any concert program. The resigned, magnificent melodies at the beginning of this composition slowly build up to a highlight with an increasing orchestration. The piece starts with a suggestive Adagio Meditativo, after which the main theme is immediately announced. A central bridge section takes the listener along through the different spheres at which the melodic and rhythmic drums embellish the chorale melodies. Thematic elements from the introduction brings the piece to a quiet and peaceful end.The sheer simplicity with which this work is written, makes it a resplendent, magnificent concert piece. 'When the Lights Go Down', refers to a moment when time stand still for a while, stillness within and around yourself.
