It is the only such piece by Vivaldi.The rarity of Vivaldi'sConcerto for Two Trumpetsstems from the difficulties inherent in the Baroque trumpet. At the time, trumpets were natural, or valveless. The instrument's range was quite restricted, and much depended on the performer's lip control, as with the modern bugle.As with the great majority of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a languid and very brief second movement, with fanfare-like passages from the soloists overlaying sustained string tones. For the final movement, Vivaldi returned to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists.

This light-hearted soprano cornet feature offers a fresh and entertaining take on the well-known Christmas carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Thought to date back to 16th-century England, the carol reflects a tradition of festive singing outside the homes of the well-to-do - often accompanied by requests for treats such as figgy pudding, a forerunner of today's Christmas pudding. Kenneth Downie's arrangement embraces the jovial spirit of the original, pairing nimble soprano cornet writing with bright, colourful scoring for brass band. The famous refrain, 'And we won't go until we've got some', sets the tone: cheerful, a touch cheeky, and full of seasonal good humour. £48.61Angel Voices (Rhapsody for Soprano Cornet & Band) Brian Bowen
This solo for soprano cornet and brass band was written by the late Brian Bowen for the New York Staff Band in 1989 when Gordon Ward was its very fine soprano cornetist. The title comes from a song by Ernest Rance (music) and Reginald Woods (lyrics) published by The Salvation Army in 1955. In this rhapsody Rance's melody is first alluded to by the horns at the pick-up to bars 19-21, then more fully with the soloist's entry to bar 51 (but in minor mode until bar 55). Much of the original music is ethereal in nature, maybe reflecting the angelic hosts. Published by BrookWright Music in 2023, the score now carries the inscription 'To the memory of Linda Ward' - Gordon Ward's wife who very sadly died in November 2021. The first commercial recording of the rhapsody was released in 1990, performed by Gordon Ward and the New York Staff Band on its Music Makers CD (TRCD 1049), available to listen to here: https://on.soundcloud.com/nHch1 PDF download includes score and parts. Honneur - Bertrand Moren
This march attempts to portray the role of Honour as a quality of character using highly energetic rhythms and strong melodic lines. The opening themes, together with those developed in the first section, perfectly reflect this significant human quality. A short bridge passage consisting of a series of sonorous chords played by the higher instruments in the band is soon taken up by the lower sections. The main theme appears in the second part of this march and is a melodic duet for Eb soprano cornet and solo cornet.
