Kathleen Mavourneen - Frederick Crouch - Andi Cook

Composed by Frederick Crouch with lyrics by Marion Crawford, this easy listening piece was popular during the American Civil War years. The term “Mavourneen" is derived from Irish Gaelic "My Beloved.". Now skilfully arranged as a cornet solo by Andi Cook, the work is open to soloists of most standards and was recently recorded on the final James Shepard Versatile Brass CD, Legacy which has increased it’s popularity again within the Brass Band movement.

The Patriots - Jan de Haan

The Dutch patriottentijd (literally 'Time of the Patriots') was a period of political instability in the 1780s. The country was led by regents who were occupied with their own personal interests rather than dedicating themselves to the needs of the people. In this revolutionary period, the devoted republican Patriots were in conflict with the Orangists. A civil war followed, in which the Patriots were beaten and driven away by a Prussian army. This composition is an abstract piece inspired by the Patriots. The thematic material is based on the Dutch war song 'Merck toch hoe sterck'. Its powerful minor melody, which has its origins in the Eighty Years' War, is recognizable throughout the work, presented in variations of constantly shifting character.

An American Tale - Dan Price

Written as the finale of the Cory Band's programme at the Brass in Concert Championships in November 2008, An American Tale is a musical tribute to the American Civil War. The work includes 'The Battle Hymn of the Republic', 'The Girl I Left Behind', 'Kingdom Come', 'Yankee Doodle Dandy', 'The Soldiers Return', 'Turkey in the Straw' and concludes with 'Amazing Grace' - a song synonymous with slavery and selected to conclude the work as a reflection of the war's primary goal. Each of the songs is scored in a psuedo-compositional style of an American composer including John Philip Sousa, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and Leonard Bernstein.

The US state of Michigan uses the Wolverine as it’s mascot because of its reputation for strength and ferocity out of proportion to its size.In the American Civil War, many particularly from Detroit joined the Michigan Brigade, nicknamed ‘The Wolverines’ by their famous leader General Custer.Instrumentation: Soprano, Solo, 2nd and 3rd Cornets Flugelhorn Solo, 1st and 2nd Tenor Horns 1st and 2nd Baritone 1st, 2nd and Bass Trombones Euphonium Eb and Bb Basses Percussion: Drum Kit

Game Of Thrones - Ramin Djawadi - Len Jenkins

"Game of Thrones" is an American fantasy drama television series based on George Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and has received widespread acclaim by critics, although its use of nudity and violence has caused controversy. Filmed in Belfast and on location elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Malta, Croatia, Iceland, and Morocco, it premiered in 2011 and continues into a fourth season in 2014. The series interweaves several plot lines and through its morally ambiguous characters, explores the issues of social hierarchy, religion, loyalty, corruption, sexuality, civil war, crime, and punishment. It is set in a period that contains elements from the dark ages through to the medieval. The music for the series was composed by Ramin Djawadi and is noted for its popular main theme which is presented here as an arrangement for Brass Band. In keeping with the period depicted, the piece contains a significant contribution from the percussion section and care has been taken to achieve the desired effect with the normal resources of the average band.
