ON RATCLIFF HIGHWAY (Brass Band Set) - Ray Steadman-Allen
Written for the centenary of Salvation Army bands in 1978, On Ratcliff Highway was premiered by The International Staff Band (and simultaneously by Melbourne Staff Band in another venue). It was inspired by a sketch on the front page of a copy of The War Cry from 1886 which depicted the Whitechapel Salvation Army band marching through the notorious highway, surrounded by crowds, with the masts of ships seen beyond the East London slums.

QUINTESSENCE (Brass Band Set) - Robert Redhead
Originally written for the Melbourne Staff Band's tour of the UK in 1978 and, more specifically, their participation in The Salvation Army International Congress in London, the music expresses the quintessence of Australian Salvationism. The five sections are; 1. An original theme expressing the immensity of the Australian continent. 2. Australia's sons, let us rejoice representing the character of the people. 3. Glory, glory, glory hallelijah from the song The Christian Mission. 4. A meditative setting of At Thy feet I bow adoring, written by two Australian Salvationists. 5. A development of the previous themes bringing the work to its climactic conclusion.

This short concert opener by American composer Zachary Docter is built around a trumpet-call motif, first heard in canon at the outset. The motif is gradually developed before a broader, more substantial theme emerges in the trombones. This new material is then explored and expanded, eventually combining with the original motif in a grand, climactic conclusion. Harmonically, the work draws on the perfect intervals of the opening call, creating a sound world that feels contemporary while remaining accessible. Energetic and effective, it makes an ideal concert opener without presenting excessive technical demands for most bands. This celebratory work by American composer William Gordon is a rhythmic play on two well known carols - Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and Angels, We Have Heard On High! This major work was commissioned by Five Lakes Silver Band and its Musical Director Christopher Ward in February 2024, and is featured on the band's CD Resurget Cineribus. The music is based on the hymn tune by Katharina von Schlegel, Be Still, My Soul, found in Sibelius' famous tone poem Finlandia (Op. 26). While the only source material used in Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' is the hymn itself as opposed to any of the developmental music found in the tone poem, it does also seek to depict the strife of the Finnish people against the censorship of the Russian Empire. It is therefore both rousing and turbulent at various times. Metamorphosis on 'Finlandia' commences with a quartet playing a full statement of the hymn in its simplest form, featuring a solo flugel. This leads into a sprightly 6/8 section where a fanfare-like figure proclaims the theme. The music in this section is at times unstable and off-kilter as references to the hymn come and go, often in a very chromatic or dissonant form - a reflection of the struggles that the Finnish people went through. Despite this, there is still a sense of optimism. A somewhat reflective slower section follows, featuring another full rendition of the hymn, with a number of solo voices taking up the tune. This is followed by several cadenzas - for cornet, trombone, Eb bass, and Bb bass, which represent different voices speaking out against the oppression of the Finnish people. This leads into an energetic final movement before a resounding proclamation of the hymn in its full glory. A return to the fanfare heard earlier in the work brings the piece to a glorious conclusion. Skidaddle will be the perfect item to provide a lighter moment in your band's programme. The composer Barrie Gott writes: ''Skidaddle' literally means to move in a hurry. This piece means exactly that - to get moving. I was experimenting at the piano at school one morning waiting for my first students and this little ditty came to mind. Four hours later I had the first draft done! It is supposed to be a bit of fun with a few technical demands for cornet and euphonium in particular. The semi-quaver (sixteenth) work needs to be precise. Try and get the audience involved and they'll be yours for the larger works on the programme.'
