First Light - Score Only - Ben Hollings

First Light was written for Kirsty Abbotts and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band. A slow lilting melody is presented in the cornet solo and passed between the band and the soloist to create images of the tranquil night before the piece reaches a climactic moment which is meant to represent the beams of light emerging as the sun rises. The theme is then presented in a tutti forte section before arriving at a tranquil finish. First Light is featured on the Kirsty Abbotts and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Bands CD, A Search for Peace.

The commissioned test-piece for the Scottish Open Contest 2015, Gallery was welcomed as a great success both by performers and audience. The title refers to six pictures, four of them by Scottish artists. Each picture has a movement, in addition to which there is a very short introduction. They are all linked, though there are short gaps between each movement, the lengths of which are at the conductor's discretion.

    Lament - Ben Hollings

Lament was written for the Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band’s programme of music at the 40th Brass in Concert Championships at the Sage, Gateshead. The programme, based upon the Great Fire of London, tells the story of the fire in 1666. There were between 8-10 deaths recorded as a result of the fire, however once the damage of the fire was realised, the death toll was expected to be much higher. Lament pays tribute to those that lost their lives in the fire, where the reduced brass ensemble is a reflection of the number of lives lost. The piece allows for a moment of reflection in a programme based on such terror and panic.

O Mio Babbino Caro - Puccini

This famous aria is from the opera Gianni Schicchi. Lauretta, daughter of Gianni Schicchi, has fallen in love with Rinuccio but there are huge tensions between their two families which threaten to keep the young couple apart. The rather discordant music which opens portrays these tensions before giving way to Lauretta's tender appeal to her father to allow her to marry the man she loves. This arrangement was prepared at the request of Brett Baker to be performed with Brass Band Of The Western Reserve, musical director Dr Keith M Wilkinson, during his visit in May, 2011.

Of Wind and Weeping - Christopher Bond

Flugel Horn Solo with Brass BandThe relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is a key element of the myths associated with the Trojan war.. Its exact nature has been a subject of dispute in both the classical period and modern times. In the Iliad, the two heroes have a deep and meaningful friendship. Achilles is tender towards Patroclus, while he is callous and arrogant towards others.Of Wind & Weeping (2015) is a flugel solo, with the soloist representing Greek warrior Achilles and the pain he faces following the death of Patroclus. For a brief moment, Achilles’ character shifts from a strong and unbreakable warrior to an emotional and vulnerable character. The solo should be played with expression and feeling, a character who is mourning a loved one with mixed feelings of sadness, shock and vengeance. The work was written in early 2015 for flugel soloist David James and Tongwynlais Temperance Band, with whom he is a member.

    Pageantry - Herbert Howells

Herbert Howells was born in Gloucestershire in 1892 and, as a youngster, wrote and conducted music for bands in the Forest of Dean, where a strong brass banding tradition still exists. In later life, when an established composer, Howells accepted an invitation to write a test-piece for the 1934 British Open Brass Band Championship. Encouraged by that great friend of the brass band movement, Sir Granville Bantock, he responded with Pageantry, a three movement work, which is still a stiff test for bands today. He undertook the task with great conscientiousness, frequently seeking advice from those more associated with the brass band genre such as Henry Geehl and John Henry Iles. The work was very well received by players and public alike, and still remains part of the core repertoire for brass bands. There are three movements and the first, King's Herald, features fanfares and a demanding animated section. The central slow movement, Cortege, is rather solemn and gives opportunity to display the lyrical qualities of brass instruments. Between February and June 1934, Britain lost three very important musical figures; Elgar, Holst and Delius. Howells was a very sensitive man (as the shattering effect on him of the death of his son revealed two years later) and Elgar had been a particular friend and mentor. It is entirely possible therefore that this elegiac music is a kind of memorial to the great composer ??" it would have been a very typical gesture. Jousts, which ends the work, is a real tour de force for brass and as tough a challenge as anyone could wish.
