    Paul McGhee: Kjeden

Subtitled dialogue for Euphonium and Brass Band, Kjeden aims to explore the relationship between soloist and ensemble. The ensemble, rather than merely accompanying; interacts with the soloist and creates soundscapes which become the backdrop for the soloists extended passages. Many instruments from the ensemble become lead lines in the material and there is a constant dialogue between the instruments as each fights for importance. Using the idea of a chain the five sections of the piece are interlinked and the point where one ends and another begins is often blurred and distorted. Each section emerges from the material which precedes it and constantly gives reminders of what has gone before as well as introducing new material.Dance like passages and fast rhythmical sections flow in and out and morph into musical ideas of highly differing character with contrast being the primal element which propels the music and creates momentum. Although the music draws to a definite conclusion, the re-introduction at the end of the piece of motifs and moods that occur at the beginning of the work mean that the music comes full circle, finishing where it began. Indeed, it is the intention that the music in fact has no ending and is to be played on a loop continuously; further blurring the boundaries and becoming an unbroken chain of material.A recording of Kjeden can be heard below (from Paul’s Soundcloud page)and you can see a preview of the solo part here.Duration: c.21 minutes

Prillar&Halling - for Solo Clarinet and Wind Band - Stig Nordhagen

"Prillar" has it's origin from Norwegian folklorist music. It's a way of calling and singing the cattle home from the fields. Halling is a wellknown folk dance from the valleys in the eastern part of Norway. In this work, the clarinet use the prillar to get the other musicians to join in.The melodic material in Prillar and Halling hasn't got all the sound of Norwegian folklore exclusively. You can also hear folkloric music from other nations. The idea is to show the similarities between these and also the small differences there are between folkloristic elements from a large area. The piece also contains the folk tune "Adam in paradise", from south of Norway. At the end, the tunes are stacked on top of each other, and the similarities of origin turns out.- Stig Nordhagen -

2nd Epitaph - Across the Water - Peter Meechan

This piece, as the title suggests, is the second Epitaph I have written, the first being Epitaph (for Hillsborough). '2nd Epitaph - Across the Water' was written for the Fountain City Brass Band, who are from the USA, to perform on D-Day landing beaches in Normandy, France. The title has a double reference point - the water between the UK and France, across which many troops (from the UK and the USA amongst others) travelled in the Normandy invasions, and also the water between the UK (the home of the composer) and the USA (the home of the band).

    Marilyn - Lucy Pankhurst

Marilyn was commissioned by Leigh Baker for Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band’s 2014 Brass in Concert programme and takes it inspiration from the twenty Andy Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe, which fused together two of his most consistent themes: death and the cult of celebrity.Marilyn draws inspiration from the ever-changing life of Marilyn Monroe. The mood swiftly shifts between fast-paced, pounding rhythms, jazz-influenced phrases and sultry melodies, to introspective soliloquies. The screenprints (produced by the layering of colours) are musically illustrated by sections of the music being superimposed across one another, creating polyrhythms and polytonality. Similarly, the differences between colour and monochrome, vitality and mortality are also prevalent throughout the work, with constant contrasts in tempi and dynamics. There are several recurring themes throughout the piece, including the opening Cornet melody (based on the blues scale) and two short melodic fragments derived from the letters MARILYN.The final note represents Marilyn’s solo voice, heard long after the tumult and focusing into an untimely, thoughtful conclusion.

Bestowal of a Century - Christopher Bond

A Concerto in Three Movements for Tenor Horn & Brass Band, Written for & Commissioned by Lowenna TaylorBestowal of a Century (2014) was commissioned by Lowenna Taylor, and funded through her Harry Mortimer Trust award which she was presented with at the 2013 British Open Championship following the completion of her studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff. The 15-minute work received its world premiere at the Cornwall Youth Brass Band Christmas concert in 2014 with solosit, Lowenna, working alongside the band under the baton of Les Neish. The 'Bestowal' refers to the presentation of the Royal Trophy by the then Prince of Wales to the famous West of England Bandsman's Festival in Bugle in 1913. Over the years it has been won by some of the greatest names in brass banding, including Black Dyke and Munn & Feltons - although more recently it has become a wonderful open festival that includes sections for local bands as well as visitors from all over the banding globe. 2014 marked the one-hundredth anniversary of the presentation of the trophy, which is the only brass band trophy to have the official seal of royal patronage. The work, in three distinct sections, opens in a mysterious way, building progressively with interjections from the horn. The composer notes its as though one can imagine different part of the trophy being put together, piece by piece, until the trophy is complete and a climax is reached. Following this, a playful theme is presented which is developed throughout the first section and interacting between soloist and band. The second movement, in complete contrast, is a lyrical melody; heart-wrenching throughout, and sits well both as part of the concerto and also as a stand-alone solo item. The third movement is light-hearted and virtuosic, demonstrating the technical capabilities of the instrument with fast and virtuosic playing, and a cadenza towards the end of the work.

Of Wind & Weeping - Christopher Bond

For Flugel Horn & Brass Band, Written for & Commissioned by David James & Tongwynlais Temperance BandThe relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is a key element of the myths associated with the Trojan war.. Its exact nature has been a subject of dispute in both the classical period and modern times. In the lliad, the two heroes have a deep and meaningful friendship. Achilles is tender towards Patroclus, while he is callous and arrogant towards others. Of Wind & Weeping (2015) is a flugel solo, with the soloist representing Greek warrior Achilles and the pain he faces following the death of Patroclus. For a brief moment, Achilles' character shifts from a strong and unbreakable warrior to an emotional and vulnerable character. The solo should be played with expression and feeling, a character who is mourning a loved one with mixed feelings of sadness, shock and vengeance. The work was written in early 2015 for flugel soloist David James and Tongwynlais Temperance Band, with whom he is a member.
