This beautiful piece written by John Ireland, with words by Robert Bridges, has now been reborn.Originally commissioned by the National Coal Board in 1947 it is believed to have been performed on May 1st 1948 at the the Haringey Stadium, involving 9 bands and 8 colliery bands. Since the original brass band parts (which bring the piece to life in its full glory) were lost over time, the John Ireland Trust committed to a project to ensure the music was not lost forever.Andrew Duncan was commissioned with the honour of recreating the brass band set to bring the full performance of band and choir back to the public's enjoyment. Descriptionstrange geometrywas commissioned by Morgan Griffiths and the Hammonds Saltaire Band for their performance at the Brass in Concert Championships of 2015.As a bit of a space/sci-fi geek, as well as a musician, two events during the summer of 2015 had a particular effect on me. The first was the tragic early death in a plane crash of the famous film composer James Horner. Horner's music, particularly in films like 'Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan', 'Avatar', 'Apollo 13' and even his debut in Roger Corman's 1980 budget film 'Battle Beyond the Stars', defined for a generation the sound of sci-fi at the cinema. Along with John Williams he created the vocabulary for those who wish to express other-worldly wonder in music and his inventive talent will be much missed in an industry where originality has become something of a dirty word in recent years.The second event was the epic flyby of Pluto by the NASA New Horizons spacecraft. There are many reasons to find this mission inspiring - for example, the scientists and engineers behind it created a craft that has travelled at 37,000 mph for nine years and three billion miles to arrive within seventy-two seconds of the predicted time for the flyby. That they achieved this with such accuracy is an outstanding tribute to humanity's ingenuity and insatiable curiosity. However, the most exciting aspect of the mission was the clear, high resolution pictures of this unthinkably remote and inhospitable world beamed back to mission control. The best previous image of Pluto was an indistinct fuzzy blob - suddenly we could see mountains made of ice, glaciers of methane and carbon monoxide and nitrogen fog - features previously unimagined on a world thought to be a slightly dull ball of cold rock. The BBC's venerable astronomy programme 'The Sky at Night' waxed lyrical about these newly discovered features, referring to "the surprising discoveries of mountains and strange geometry on the surface of this cold distant world".I like to think that Horner would have been as inspired as I have been by this real-life science story, and this piece uses some of the vocabulary of the sci-fi movie soundtrack in a tribute to the memory of a great musician and to the inspirational geeks at NASA who have boldly taken us where no-one has gone before.Note: This work comes with a B4 portrait score. Savoy Christmas Medley - Traditional - Len Jenkins based on an original arrangement by Debroy Somers
The Savoy Christmas Medley is a well-known and often played piece originally arranged from traditional music by Debroy Somers a big-band bandleader in the 1920's. William Henry (Debroy) Somers was an ex-army bandmaster who formed the Savoy Orpheans dance band, resident at the famous Savoy Hotel between 1923 and 1927. Whilst there are several editions of this music for full Brass Band, this latest arrangement has been tailored to suit a brass quintet with optional percussion. In many cases the availability of players around the festive season, or the space to accommodate a full band in some of the venues for Christmas engagements or for fundraising, means that a Quintet can be the preferred option. In order to achieve a good Quintet arrangement, it is necessary to achieve the same quality and diversity of sound as a full band but within a smaller group. A challenging objective which we believe has been achieved in this publication. In common with our developing practice, the arrangement is scored for both Brass Band and Concert Brass instruments.

526: March - Summit Cross (Beat Hari)This exciting and energetic work introduces a new contributor to our journals. Beat Hari helps lead the band at Frutigen Corps, Switzerland. This march was composed with the intention of featuring it in an open-air concert beside the ski slopes. Members of the corps regularly join the band, instigating conversations with skiing guests by distributing bible verses and sweets. The composer has named this march because of the many Swiss mountains that have crosses on their summit as symbols of God's protection over the population living in the valleys below. The march follows a traditional format with a solid rhythmic construction built from the bass line.527: Christ is all (Olaf Ritman)The Salvation Army song, Christ is all (S.A.S.B. 588) is one that is cherished by the composer. The verses by Herbert Booth are both powerful and vulnerable and the melody by William A. Williams really touches the soul.528: My all to follow (David Edmonds)This piece pays tribute to all who have accepted the call to become Salvation Army officers and envoys. Such a calling involves significant change and can be difficult when leaving their comfort zone or moving away from family.529: We shall win (Alan Williams)William Hodgson's song We're a band that shall conquer the foe (S.A.S.B. 990) is one of confidence and encouragement in our daily fight against evil, sin and injustice, both in the world and in our lives. As such, this music should be full of that same confidence.

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is a British composer, who, from a young age, showed talent on the violin and entered the Royal College of Music, studying with Charles Villers Standford. His music become so popular that his Hiawatha trilogy was the second most performed choral piece (joint with Mendelssohn's Elijah, and only beaten by Handel's Messiah) with choral societies up and down the British Isles. In fact, Hiawatha was arranged by Charles Godfrey as a test-piece for the 1902 National Brass Band Championship of Great Britain, held at Crystal Palace.Commissioned by the theatre impresario Herbert Beerbohm, Coleridge-Taylor composed incidental music for His Majesty's Theatre London production of the Shakespeare play, Othello, in the West End, in 1909. In 1912, the play opened to the public, with a suite of five movements put together soon afterwards. The Dance, arranged here by Rob Bushnell, makes a great concert opener.This arrangement is for the British-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. £24.95Lest We Forget - Christopher Bond
Lest We Forget is a phrase added as a final line at the end of the Ode of Remembrance, taken from Laurence Binyon's poem For the Fallen, first published in The Times newspaper in September 1914. Providing the title for this work for brass band, the piece aims to combine both the acoustic nature of the brass band medium alongside narrated passages and pre-recorded extracts to provide a moving tribute. The words originally spoken by Prime Minister Herbert Asquith in 1914 can be narrated in performance. However, a free audio download, manipulated to sound like a 1914 radio broadcast is available from Prima Vista. Lest We Forget received its premiere at The Sage, Gateshead, on November 17th 2014, performed by the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, conducted by Robert Childs. The work opened their winning Brass in Concert programme, and has since been performed by bands all over the world as a fitting tribute to the Great War.
