£37.35Fallen Souls (Brass Band) Andrew Wainwright
Fallen Souls was the winner of Grimethorpe Colliery Band's 1st Annual Composition Competition in 2023. This depictive and impactful work explores the theme of human fallibility. The piece begins with a slow, yearnful introduction that depicts a fall from grace, represented by a horn solo that reflects the innate goodness of humanity. However, the music soon becomes more agitated and dissonant as it represents the temptations that can lead us astray. The opening reaches a climax of chaos and despair, as we are shown the devastating consequences of our choices. The following section depicts the temptations of humanity. The music is chaotic and seductive in this section, with regular time changes and rhythmic instability, representing the many temptations that surround us. The section ends with a sense of uncertainty, as we are left wondering whether we will succumb to these temptations. There is a reprise of the opening horn solo, and a return to the notion of human fallibility, but this time in extended form. Again there is a build toward chaos, and the music becomes more complex and textured, reflecting the complexity of the human journey. The work ends somewhat abruptly with a blaze, leaving the listener with a sense of both hope and uncertainty. £29.88Fanfare from La Peri(Brass Band) Dukas arr. Rob Bushnell
La Peri is a one-act ballet by the French composer Paul Dukas, best known for The Sorcerer's Apprentice (L'apprenti sorcier) as in the 1940 Disney film Fantasia. Dukas was commissioned to write La Peri by the Ballets Russes, producing a Poeme danse en un tableau ('dance poem in one scene') in 1911; this become his last published work. With Natalia Trouhanova due to play the Peri and Vaslav Nijinsky to play Iskender (the name of Alexander the Great in Persian, who is scouting around Iran in search of the Flower of Immortality), the production was ultimately cancelled because Serge Diaghilev feel Trouhanova was not a skilled enough dancer to be partnered to Nijinsky. Trouhanova later hired Ivan Clustine to choreograph the music, with the ballet premiering at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on 22 April 1912.The brilliant fanfare that precedes the ballet is often performed separately and is the arrangement available here. Arranged for British-style brass band, it has optional percussion parts as well as alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass. Originally conceived as a trombone duet for the graduation recital of Andy Brooks at Western University, this setting of Matt Merker's popular choral work has been adapted by Noel Brooks as a featured work for trombone trio with brass band. The arrangement follows the emotional arc of the hymn's lyrics, utilising the brass band's colours to reflect the themes of each verse. The journey begins with a sense of vulnerability; the accompaniment is kept sparse and cold to echo the text's plea regarding a failing faith. In the second verse, the music transitions into a more encouraging and uplifted atmosphere, reflecting the assurance of being "precious in His Holy sight." A shift occurs in the third verse, which takes on a darker, more reflective character to support the gravity of the lyrics. This contemplative section builds steadily toward the final chorus, where a sense of confidence returns. The work culminates in a strong musical statement of the hymn's central promise: "He will hold me fast." Je te veux, or I Want You, is a valse chantee (sung waltz) by the French composer Erik Satie, with lyrics by Henry Pacory. It was written for Paulette Darty, who first sang it in 1903 at La Scala, Paris, with Satie accompanying. There are various versions that Satie produced, the original for piano and voice, a version for brass 'orchestra', for full orchestra (where a trio section was added), and a version for solo piano (but including the new trio section). This arrangement is for the UK-style brass band, with alternative parts for horns in F and bass-clef lower brass, and is of the longer version (with the trio section). As a result, it lends itself to being performed in a various of ways, with the ensemble has the option of selecting the part of it compound ternary form to play: (A-B-A)(C-D-C)(A-B-A). £67.24Letters from Flanders (Brass Band) Andrew Batterham
This descriptive work by Australian composer Andrew Batterham portrays the experiences of his maternal grandfather, Corporal Reginald Littlejohns, (4th Australian Machine Gun Battalion) in the First World War. Reginald left Melbourne for Europe in May 1916 then served in Flanders through to the end of the war. He returned in April 1919, having sent hundreds of letters home during his service. His honest, articulate, and highly descriptive prose served as inspiration for this piece. Each of the 5 movements portrays a different aspect of Reginald's war, with a quote from his letters included. The first movement was premiered by the Box Hill City Band, conducted by Matt van Emmerik, in Melbourne. Daniel van Bergen conducted Booroondara Brass performing most of the work in April 2019, and Box Hill premiered the complete version in November 2019 conducted by Simon Brown. Love Eternal was written by Gavin Lamplough for Neil Blessett, who at the time of writing was the Principal Horn player of both Birmingham (UK) Citadel Band and the International Staff Band of The Salvation Army. After popular demand, it was set as a cornet or flugel horn solo, both with piano accompaniment and this version with brass band. The arranger uses Jarod Cooper's popular contemporary worship song King of Kings, Majesty as the basis for the work and the piece seeks to provide a vehicle for the rich timbres of the tenor horn to be enjoyed by the listener. The music reflects the Christian musician's desire to offer their talents to God to be used by Him, and the lyrics of the song are ones of contrast as the musical journey of this piece seeks to emulate the juxtaposition through contrasting moods.
