£8.99Classic Hymns for Orchestra - The Music of Kenneth Downie - Full Album (WAV)
This unique and innovative album features 15 magnificent arrangements of classic hymns for orchestra by Kenneth Downie. All hymns have been given imaginative and highly creative treatments, being both contemplative music for personal listening as well as 'pre-service' church music. Most of the 15 tracks can also be used as congregational accompaniment music, thus breathing new life into these timeless classics. Ranging from soothing to majestic and from bold to sprightly, each hymn has been mixed using state-of-the-art sample libraries as well as using the actual sounds of some of the finest musicians around. These include the BBC Symphony Orchestra, a number of London and Berlin's most sought after session musicians, the renowned Estonian Chamber Choir, the dulcet tones of a Yamaha CFX 9' grand piano, and the iconic sounds of the Royal Albert Hall organ. In enhancing the album, Cory band's Principal Cornet Tom Hutchinson and London-based mezzo soprano Susanne Dymott add their own touch with specially recorded tracks. Kenneth Downie's imaginative arrangements are enhanced by a track each from Tom Hutchinson's lyrical cornet and the rich sound of mezzo soprano Susanne Dymott. This recording is one to savour." Stephen Bulla - Composer & Conductor"Kenneth's brass band music has been part of my musical experience for 50 years. His prolific writing for brass band displays sincerity, imagination and skill in equal measure. I admire especially the way his subtle harmonic sensibility reaches to the heart of familiar hymns and sacred songs. To experience this for the first time in full orchestral colour is a revelation." £48.72Angel Voices (Rhapsody for Soprano Cornet & Band) Brian Bowen
This solo for soprano cornet and brass band was written by the late Brian Bowen for the New York Staff Band in 1989 when Gordon Ward was its very fine soprano cornetist. The title comes from a song by Ernest Rance (music) and Reginald Woods (lyrics) published by The Salvation Army in 1955. In this rhapsody Rance's melody is first alluded to by the horns at the pick-up to bars 19-21, then more fully with the soloist's entry to bar 51 (but in minor mode until bar 55). Much of the original music is ethereal in nature, maybe reflecting the angelic hosts. Published by BrookWright Music in 2023, the score now carries the inscription 'To the memory of Linda Ward' - Gordon Ward's wife who very sadly died in November 2021. The first commercial recording of the rhapsody was released in 1990, performed by Gordon Ward and the New York Staff Band on its Music Makers CD (TRCD 1049), available to listen to here: https://on.soundcloud.com/nHch1 PDF download includes score and parts. £26.23The Three Kings (Euphonium Solo with Brass Band) Cornelius arr. Wainwright
This beautiful arrangement of the much loved tenor solo The Three Kings was made for the GUS Band and euphonium soloist Mark Giles, for the CD recording Christmas Fantasia - The Music of Andrew Wainwright (2013). The Three Kings, or Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar, is a Christmas carol by the German composer Peter Cornelius. He set Die Konige for a vocal soloist, accompanied by Philip Nicolai's hymn Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern ('How Brightly Shines the Morning Star'), which he erroneously thought was an Epiphany hymn. In fact, it is an Advent hymn in which the morning star is an allegory for the arrival of Jesus, not the Star of Bethlehem. In Cornelius' original second setting, the accompaniment was played on a piano but the English organist Ivor Atkins later arranged the accompaniment for choir, with the choir singing the words of the original hymn. The carol describes the visit of the Biblical Magi to the Infant Jesus during the Nativity and is also used as an Epiphany anthem.
