    The Land of the Long White Cloud (Aotearoa) - Philip Sparke

    Dating from 1979, The Land of the Long White Cloud (Aotearoa) was Philip Sparke’s first test-piece. It was commissioned by the New Zealand Brass Band Association for their 1980 National Championships (their centenary year) and set for the European Brass Band Championships, the same year, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Aotearoa was the name given to New Zealand by its Polynesian settlers whose first sight of the islands was a long, flat cloud lying low over the land. The work has no specific programme although many have seen pictures of the surging ocean in the opening bars. A faster dance-like section leads to a slow, haunting solo for soprano cornet; this is taken up by the whole band before earlier material returns. The dance-like tune is, this time, given a fugal treatment and the opening bars return to close the work.Philip Sparke was born in London and studied composition, trumpet and piano at the Royal College of Music, where he gained an ARCM. It was at the College that his interest in bands arose. He played in the College wind orchestra and also formed a brass band among the students, writing several works for both ensembles.At that time, his first published works appeared – Concert Prelude (brass band) and Gaudium (wind band). A growing interest in his music led to several commissions, his first major one being this featured piece for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand – The Land of the Long White Cloud. He has written for brass band championships in New Zealand, Switzerland, Holland, Australia and the UK, including three times for the National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall.In September 2000, he was awarded the Iles Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians for his services to brass bands and in 2005 Music of the Spheres won the National Band Association/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Contest. In 2011, he received the BUMA International Brass Award for his contribution to brass music.His conducting and adjudicating activities have taken him to most European countries, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Canada and the USA. In May 2000, he took the major step of becoming a full-time composer by founding his own publishing company, Anglo Music Press. The company is devoted to publishing his brass band, concert band, fanfare band and instrumental publications as well as recordings dedicated to his latest works.

    Song for the Skies - Paul Lovatt-Cooper

    Song for the Skies was commissioned by Tuba virtuoso Les Neish and was given its world premier on the December 9th 2010 with the James Madison University Brass Band in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA.Les asked me to compose a slow melody that highlights the wonderful sonorous sound of the Tuba. I am a big fan of Les and of the instrument and knowing the capabilities of Les as a soloist I wanted to experiment with the range and colour of the instrument in this solo.After a warm introduction from the ensemble the soloist enters almost timeless over the muted cornets. The melody when it is first heard has a somewhat haunting Celtic feel to it. It is intentionally marked as con rubato so that the soloist can really put their own musical stamp on the music. As the haunting melody repeats again this time in a change of key the accompaniment takes more of a role within the piece of music performing counter melodies within this second section.The middle of the piece introduces a new secondary melodic device that serves as an introduction to the original melody played in all its glory by the ensemble. This dies away to leave the second half of the melody in the euphoniums and baritones as the soloist plays a soaring counter melody in the highest register of the instrument.The piece starts to return home with a recapitulation of the introduction followed by the second part of the original melody by the soloist. After a momentary reflective solo from the soloist the introduction is used for a final time before the tuba guides us home to conclude.For the soloist, there are a number of occasions where the opportunity to play in the upper register of the instrument arises. However, I have also given the opportunity for the soloist to play various passages down the octave so it suits the performers playing style and range.Song for the Skies is very simple yet beautiful and I feel it suits the playing of the Eb Tuba perfectly.     Elixir of Youth - Christopher Bond

    Elixir of Youth (2013) was written for the 2013 Brass for Heroes charity event where it was premiered on 19th October 2013 at St Paul’s Hall in Huddersfield under the baton of Philip Harper. The title of the work reflects the nature of the band that was put together for that premiere performance; an all-star youth band comprising a selection of the country’s young brass banding talent, with the term Elixir referring here to the everlasting talent seen in young brass players throughout the United Kingdom’s brass bands and bands’ and teachers abilities to keep producing such high quality musicians for the banding movement.The work, structured in three sections, is a showcase for band with a heroic opening where fanfare-like gestures in the cornets and trombones juxtapose rapid euphonium and baritone runs, alongside sweeping horns and percussion effects. As the piece progresses, a grove is introduced – just in the tubas at first, accompanied by a hi-hat - before spreading through the band, definitely stuff to tap your toes to! The middle, slower section of the work sees both flugel and cornet solos, with additional inputs from the euphonium and solo horn before a climax and return to the tempo and music of the opening section. A rousing close concludes the work where all of the work’s themes are interweaved to create a sense of power, unity and grandeur; an Elixir of Youth.

    Charge of the Light Brigade - Andrew Stevenson

    Charge of the Light Brigade tells the story of a battle in the Crimean War, where six hundred members of the light cavalry were sent to attack an Artillery Battery. However, due to miscommunications they were sent to the wrong Artillery Battery, past the original target. The 600 hundred soldiers then found themselves being attacked on two sides because of the error. 156 men lost their lives and another 122 were wounded.The piece follows the structure of the poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. The fanfare that starts the piece is the exact same used at the battle. The presto is the advance of the Light Brigade towards the Russian guns. The slow passage is a hymn for the men that lost their lives and the finale symbolises the triumphant return of the men that survived, and how the memories of the horrific battle that took place linger on in their minds. Throughout the piece, I have used antiphonal sounds to reinforce the ideas that I have taken from the poem.A recording of the Charge of the Light Brigade is available on the Foden's CD, Patrons' Choice VII (DOY CD329)

    The Year of the Dragon - Philip Sparke

    The highlight of Cory’s centenary celebrations throughout 1984 was a concert held in St. David’s Hall, Cardiff, in March. The band, with the aid of funds provided by the Welsh Arts Council, commissioned Philip Sparke to write a work for first performance at this concert. The result was “The Year of the Dragon” of which the composer writes:“At the time I wrote The Year of the Dragon, Cory had won two successive National Finals and I set out to write a virtuoso piece to display the talents of this remarkable band to the full.”The work is in three movements:TOCCATA opens with an arresting side drum figure and snatches of themes from various sections of the band, which try to develop until a broad and powerful theme from the middle of the band asserts itself. A central dance-like section soon gives way to the return of this theme, which subsides until faint echoes of the opening material fade to a close.INTERLUDE takes the form of a sad and languid solo for trombone. A chorale for the whole band introduces a brief spell of optimism but the trombone solo returns to close the movement quietly.FINALE is a real tour-de-force for the band with a stream of rapid semi-quavers running throughout the movement. The main theme is heroic and march-like but this is interspersed with lighter, more playful episodes. A distant fanfare to the sound of bells is introduced and this eventually returns to bring the work to a stirring close.

    The Legend of King Arthur - Peter Meechan

    King Arthur is the subject of many tales, stories, myths and legends - from his ascension to the throne by pulling the sword from the stone, his courageous battles with his fellow Knights of the Round Table, to his ultimately tragic love for Guinevere.The Legend of King Arthur is a musical portrayal of some of the most important moments in the legend.The opening of the work - a rock inspired overture - is a reference to Arthura??s final resting place (at least, so some legends have it!), the modern day Glastonbury (Avalon in the legend), and it is in this opening that we hear for Arthura??s theme.This high octane opening gives way to a mysterious section - as Merlin (the mystical wizard) places in a stone a sword, upon which was inscribed a??Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone is the rightwise born king of all Englanda?. The music describes the mystical surroundings as each of the contenders for the throne take their turn - to no avail - and with a return to the original theme, we hear Arthur pull the sword from the stone, to become King of England.Next we hear a depiction of Arthura??s greatest victory in battle ??" The Battle of Mount Badon. He finally defeated the Saxon invaders of Britain - over 900 Saxons perished - and the victory brought about an extended period of peace. Arthur is portrayed as brave, bold and confident as he and his Knights end years of invasion.The penultimate section of the work tells the tale of Arthura??s tragic love for Guinevere - his traitorous wife, who through her infidelity with Sir Lancelot (Arthura??s most trusted Knight), ultimately leads Arthur in to his final battle with his nephew, Mordred.We hear the final bitter battle, which eventually ends with only Arthur and Mordred fighting. Arthur is wounded, fatally, by his nephew -at which point we hear with a sudden and dramatic sounding of Arthura??s theme - and is taken to Avalon to die.The Legend of King Arthur is dedicated to Michael Bach and Brass Band BA?Argermusik Luzern, who commissioned the work.
