GRACES OF LOVE (Le Gratie d'Amore) (Brass Band Set) - Waespi, Oliver

2015 National Championships Finals Testpiece - Third Section. The Graces of Love (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of the present piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied and developed. Finally, the third movement contains a saltarello with a hypnotic rhythm, ending the work with flair and gusto. Duration: 11:30

Jesus Shall Conquer (Brass Band - Score and Parts) - Downie, Kenneth

This music was written for Salvation Brass. It is declamatory in style and would fit the role of an intrada. The words associated are by a former General of The Salvation Army, Albert Orsborn, and have a very optimistic tone, consistent with the Christian faith. The chorus reads: Jesus shall conquer, lift up the strain! Evil shall perish and righteousness shall reign. The tune used is Pilgrims (T.B. 548), by Henry Thomas Smart, the 19th Century English composer and organist, who also wrote another of my favourite hymn tunes, Regent Square. Keeping a steady tempo will help to preserve the dignity of the theme and also help to avoid the busier passages in the score from being rushed. As ever, articulation and dynamics require careful attention.

    Danceries (Set II)

Danceries Set II continues the format established with the previous Danceries (1999) by using tunes and dances from Playford’s 17th Century Dancing Master to form the basis of an extended dance suite. In this set, the melodies have become more abstracted and project only a distant echo of their original forms. As before, each movement is self-contained, colourful and direct, with its own distinct mood. The outer movements, Jennie’s Bawbee and Peascod’s Galliarda , share driving percussion with an almost military air. Tom Tinker’s Toye and Heart’s Ease , the second and third movements, are both settings of original melodies. All movements are more extended than in the first set, with a freer use and approach to the material, supported by a greater variety of harmonic colouring. The result is a richer, even more exhilarating set of dances.? Item Code: 0-571-57077-1 Duration: 15'00"
