Trombone Solo.In 1953, a new musical by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen was staged, "Carnival in Flanders". Unfortunately, it was not successful. However, one of the songs, "Here's that Rainy Day" became a standard on the cabaret scene.I have arranged this memorable song for solo trombone and brass band. It begins in a Latin style, then moves to the famous Jazz Big Band style. Good key players make the band parts playable by most bands - as long as they like to 'swing'! The trombone part is not easy, on the other hand, neither is it aimed at the 'select few' virtuoso players. Impressive stuff though, with 'written' sections that sound like improvisation.

As a French horn player, the successful German composer Manfred Schneider is familiar with brass instruments, so he took on the challenge of writing at a real Concerto for Trombone and Wind Band, which he called 'Poem a la carte'. The composition was commissioned by the JBK Sonthofen wind band. Though the 'misterioso' introduction already features some virtuoso passages for the soloist, the latter really takes off in the energetic allegro. Then comes a lyrical largo and the work ends with a sparkling allegro allowing the soloist to demonstrate true virtuosity.

This exciting new 22-minute concert suite for Brass Sextet has been composed during the months of lockdown charting the feelings of a nation, with seven movements playable by 6 (or more) players. The music was composed with the intention for players to perform either together live in a small group, in isolation by way of a virtual performance (downloadable backing tracks are available to play along to) and ultimately, to give players something to enjoy as we all miss our brass band families. This concert suite is the perfect addition to all bands' libraries at a time when rehearsals are limited. Playable by most standards of bands, this slow melodic piece fits easily into any concert programme and provides a chance to showcase lyrical soloistic playing and delicate accompanying skills. The work was recorded on the JSVB final CD release, Legacy.
