At a time when we are being encouraged to survey the recent past, its title aims to catch a flavour of that spirit of optimistic vision which coloured the British psyche at the end of the Second War, at once heroic, elegiac, and confident. The concerto's three movements are arranged in a circular pattern around a reflective slow movement. At the heart of that movement is a Cadenza, marked to be played off-stage, where the soloist is surrounded and supported by an additional group of fanfare players. By contrast, the outer movements are energetic and brisk, at times heroic, and at times virtuosic. Also available with piano accompaniment.

Taking the form of an overture, this piece contains passing references to many well-known festive songs, and features Hark! the herald angels sing (C.C. 38), The first Nowell (C.C. 86), Have yourself a merry little Christmas (C.C. 115) and O come, all ye faithful (C.C. 61).There are a lot of notes in this music. Keep it light throughout and make the most of every opportunity to play quietly. In sections D and E, The first Nowell is presented in 2/2 time. Getting used to this unusual presentation of the melody may take careful rehearsal.

2013 Finals of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain - 3rd SectioTo some, the tragic story of the Penlee lifeboat, Solomon Browne, would need no introduction, and to some the pain felt is still very much a reality. The composer, born just a few weeks before that fateful night on the 19th December 1981, has created this work as a musical homage to the bravery of the souls who lost their lives and has dedicated it to their memory.Penlee was commissioned by the Cornwall Youth Brass Band using funds bequeathed by Michael Pickett. The first performance was given by the Cornish Youth Brass Band, conducted by Ian Porthouse, at St. Michael's Church, Newquay, on 30th December 2008.Penlee has been voted into the Classic FM Hall of Fame 2011 at No.106. The music provides a fitting commentary on the lyrics of the song.
